A comment on the problem "Can update twitter stauts via SMS using the India shortcode - 5566511" in Twitter:
Bearing in mind that this reply was posted 5 months ago, is it still current? None of our friends and relatives in India (West Bengal), including those with BSNL or Vodafone Essar, have been able to use the short code, other than to receive SMS. The short code also appears to be a premium rate number - is it still cheaper to send text messages to that than to Twitter's international number?
Isn't it possible to have a normal Indian number as an alternative (as seems to be offered by www.vakow.com/twitter listed by rg in his reply)? Finally, Twitter currently automatically encourages everyone registering an Indian mobile phone to use the 5566511 short code, even though it may not work for their mobile number. Shouldn't Twitter provide the usual international number rather than the short code to those users whose mobile numbers aren't attached to the listed carriers on a plan on which it works? – obhi, on April 19, 2008 22:14

Thanks very much for the reaction.
Is it any easier to provide the feature requested here: http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/to... ? In case it is, it would give some of us a workaround while you're working out how to fix this problem. If each user is able to have several personas, we can choose which persona (eg, family, friends, work, ...) a certain person is able to follow (and reciprocate). Then the problem with trying to manage who does/doesn't follow our one and only username becomes less acute.
Of course, the logic of forcing reciprocal relationships in private accounts still seems to be extremely weak, especially when this is not the case for public accounts .

obhi replied on March 25, 2008 22:51 to the idea "Feature Request: Multiple Identites w/one Twitter Account" in Twitter:
Yes, great idea! That would allow, for example, channelling different tweets to different circles of friends/colleagues. However, as people might want to send the same tweet to more than one circle, perhaps it's possible for an individual user to create a number of different personas which he/she could then select when posting a tweet - at least online. It might need to allow a default persona if posting from a mobile phone, though.
Anyhow, it could partially solve the current bug (posted in other threads) about it being impossible for Twitter users with private accounts to follow other private accounts without being followed in return. Maybe we in Europe have a different concept of privacy ... ?-

obhi replied on March 20, 2008 13:55 to the problem "I approved someone to follow me, and now I am automatically following them." in Twitter:
This problem also limits one of the potential advantages of using Twitter to create a closed circle for a special interest group. For example, we've set up a Twitter username for our feature film which is private for now so that only those in the cast and crew can receive the updates. In time, we intend to make it open, once the film is closer to its release date. However, now everyone following the username can read all the private Twitter updates of the cast and crew. This seems likely to discourage our cast and crew from following the updates for the film - I know it puts me off!
By the way, the 'Block' feature not only stops the film from following me but also stops me from following it, which defies the objective of the exercise. I also tried the 'off' feature to stop the film's username from following my Twitter updates but Twitter tells me it can't find me and asks whether I've misspelt my own name ... . May I suggest that this is a bug rather than a feature?
