I would like to add that such clients exists for Twitter.
It's named TweetDeck (http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta/). TweetDeck is an Adobe Air desktop application, currently in public beta, that looks to capture the abundance of social media and display it in a unique columned user interface.
An other one is Nambu (http://www.nambu.com/) which offer similar functionalities (beta available for Mac OS for now)

Resizing window and message grouping
Would be nice being able to resize the window of the Yammer desktop app in order to display more messages with a multi-column scheme, grouped by group or other criteria (matching specific string pattern or tag, author, etc.). This grouping could also be done in separate windows.
