Richard Osbaldeston replied on January 22, 2009 23:26 to the question "Missing preferences page and navigation popup" in Feedly:
Ok got it now, just feared changing the width in my preferences had caused the issue.
Not quite sure what you mean by merging.. I tend to use the popup to switch to the overflow sources far more than scrolling down and finding same in the rhs blue sources navigation on home/latest. tend to only use rhs one to drill down from sources views. So I quite like the popup.
Noticed search tends to mirror the default Firefox search field, you could click on the wrong one if you weren't fully awake. But personally hiding the search/icon entirety in a popup would probably be even more confusing. Like when I couldn't find the navigation dropdown just now.
Its not horrible where search is currently, I have to admit I've tended to do most of my searches back in Google Reader so far. Mostly I think because I can tighten the context to folders/feeds from there. But possibly because feedly search wasnt quite so obvious before.

Missing preferences page and navigation popupSeem to have lost access to the preferences page in version: 1.2.142 (build 2297). The dropdown arrow and popup is completely missing. I can only see the dashboard, import and search icons?
Richard Osbaldeston replied on January 09, 2009 15:16 to the question "Ability to opt-out of flickr, youtube intergration per category" in Feedly:
..so could we expect a global opt out in the shorter term? might be useful preference anyway.
Was trying to take a screenshot to show a friend how I keep up with dev feeds, at first tried to aardvark the extra boxes away, but 'r' cause a refresh and 'k' next article. Had to do some sly post shot editing.
Richard Osbaldeston replied on January 09, 2009 14:13 to the question "Ability to opt-out of flickr, youtube intergration per category" in Feedly:
Think its using the parent category to perform the search isn't it? For development I'm seeing arrested development vids and quite odd flickrs (not java development). This also caught me out as I choose deliberately short (there are shorter ones) names to fit more category's in feedlys top navigation menu which robs the search of even more context.
Seems the parents results persist if I drop into category sources, which may be odd for my media category which includes the local newspaper, tv listings, cinema times and fav editorials (non-technical) etc... each quite different sources.

Ability to opt-out of flickr, youtube intergration per categoryJust got 1.2.122 this morning and I'm finding the new flickr & youtube integration mostly distracting and irrelevant for various feeds. I've tended to group my feeds in several broad categories media, gaming, development etc.. but being broad means the results that come back are rarely relevant.
Contained in these groups will be specific feeds for my own specific fields of interest, 'ui' for several client side java feeds for instance.. very few flickr picture & youtube hits in this field even if it could alias ui to 'client side java'. I seem to get a random selection of images for the topic 'ui'. The searches are obviously keyed to the group name, rather than some kind of term extraction of all the contained feeds (even then some are xyz's blog rather than anything to do with the topics covered). Term extract the categories in the feeds?
Would find it useful to be able to turn off the integration for certain folders, feeds or some means to set my own query aliases to pass to the integration.-

Title of Latest tab reads LabelReally trivial issue but if you hover over the Latest link the tool tip comes up as 'Label' and not 'Latest'.

Updating of thumbs related to photo urlAdded a photo to my flicker account last night and set my feedly photo url to it. I can see the full sized photo from my feedlys 'My Profile' page. But I'm not seeing the thumbnail in any of the 'top recommenders' panels - it's still the default non-smiley.
What needs to be done to get the smaller thumbs to update? I've tried loggin out of feedly, clearing the cache, restarting the browser and sharing new posts (adding recommends) all to no avail?
Richard Osbaldeston asked a question in Feedly on January 06, 2009 12:52:
Order of date sections in Latest riverJust noticed the order of dates in my river view of Latest is odd. Starts as expected with Jan 06, Jan 05 but then jumps to Jan 03, Dec 25, Dec 16, then back to Jan 05, Jan 04, Jan 03, Jan 02, Jan 01, Dec 31, Dec 21, Dec 31, Dec 30..
What would cause these jumps? was expecting a simple reverse chronological order. Is this something to do with the progressive updates? having a lot unread after the holidays? my feedly reports version: 1.2.121 (build 2244) .

Is it possible to pass the view preference as part of the url?Just thinking sometimes I'd like to look at 'latest' or a particular category as 'magazine' view and other times as 'river' or another view. I know my previous view preferences persists, what I'm talking about is being able to bookmark the view rather then keep fiddling with it.
Richard Osbaldeston replied on October 29, 2008 12:22 to the question "How do I increase the number of listings on a view page say http://www.feedly.com/feedly#latest or http://www.feedly.com/feedly#category?" in Feedly:
I have a similar question, what I've noticed is that in magazine views the featured articles tend to 'steal' unread articles from their category. E.g. each category seems to pull the latest 5 unread articles, if 3 of those are featured then while scrolling down to the category/feed they can look a little short-changed. i.e. hi-volume can feeds look empty.
One thing you can already do to get more posts with latest at least is change the view from magazine to river, although this shows a mixed view of posts by date rather than per-category.-
Richard Osbaldeston replied on October 29, 2008 10:54 to the problem "Undisplayable character appended to favourite feed titles" in Feedly:
After some digging I've found this is (mostly) a configuration problem my my work machine. Looking at http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/misce... in firefox 3 or ie7 showed I couldn't render the majority of unicode symbols (should be able to see the first half, never mind "black star" which I couldnt from the office).
Found lots of discussion around how the handling of unicode was improved in firefox 3 which ironically meant you're more likely to see the missing char unicode hex boxes like I do in feedly. Followed advice from thread http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtop... re:installing the extra language support in XP which has finally allowed me to see black star - although my PC at home was quite abe to render all the unicode chars without installing the extra language fonts. So I doubt it's really needed, but something it does during installation fixes the problematic fonts, or substitutes or caches or whatever the real problem was.
Richard Osbaldeston replied on October 28, 2008 13:44 to the idea "show unread articles in the top menu" in Feedly:
Couldn't you create a shortcut for the dashboard (http://www.feedly.com/feedly#dashboard) and keep switching back to that for your categories. dashboard also seems to have the unread counts, for that matter so does springcleaning (only do don't want to do any cleaning).
Richard Osbaldeston reported a problem in Feedly on October 24, 2008 11:22:
Undisplayable character appended to favourite feed titlesNotice that wherever some feed titles are shown I get an odd undisplayable unicode char. This seems to represent a favourite (non-favourites show an empty star in the same position).

Richard Osbaldeston replied on October 24, 2008 09:49 to the question "Missing categories from navigation & cover" in Feedly:
Created some screenshots showing my google reader folders and what I see in feedly. Tried the above, marking unread, logging out and restarting the browser, but didn't appear (they didn't appear before I'd read them either). Plus screenshots were from my home machine last night, several hours later and missing feed had received several genuine new posts. Still saw same issue on another installation and well past any short-term sync issues.
Didn't see any settings for folders in google reader that might exclude the category from feedly. But resisted moving the subscription or renaming the folder etc.. in case I lost anything that might prove to be usefully diagnostic.
url: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/osbald/... (may need to download or scroll up&down&drag some of these to get decent res).

screencast? how? - at the moment it looks like I'll have to wait for some new posts from the problematic folder (read them this morning). hmm unless marking unread via google reader might work? – Richard Osbaldeston, on October 23, 2008 10:47
Richard Osbaldeston replied on October 23, 2008 10:09 to the problem "Feedly no fun without pictures." in Feedly:
When you say 'enhance the probability' do you mean it's pretty unlikely to have empty images in the featured section? I've seen an empty one both yesterday and today since updating to this version.
Both times its the same eurogamer feed which is a dreadfully anaemic feedburner example (but I prefer their content). They never have images or post descriptions beyond the one line title. Wish their was an acknowledged standard for what makes for attractive well formed (& categorized) feeds. Have tried playing with yahoo pipes to combine other more visual feeds specifically for more feedly yumminess, mixed results so far..
But anyway my feedly loves to feature these anaemic posts - is it possible my regular reading of these posts encourages feedly to feature them?
Richard Osbaldeston asked a question in Feedly on October 23, 2008 09:56:
Missing categories from navigation & coverI seem to be missing a couple of categories (folders) from the category navigation of the right hand side of latest, greatest and the cover view. Are these supposed to be showing all categories? or limited/adaptive a bit like the top horizontal choice.
I can see these categories via the drop down "see more categories" button and via dashboard & spring cleaning. One of these missing categories is low traffic, and has no recent posts, so I could see why it's not present. But the other has daily posts and both have been subscribed for weeks. i.e. not a recent changes sync vs cache issue.
