I think my problem is solved - i went to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird... and followed the advice about the Quickcam software conflict and it sorted it all out ... for now at least ...

I have exactly the same problem ... and restarting the computer did nothing to help. I cannot open tb anymore. Is it normal for the updates to go from 2.0.0.19 to 2.0.0.21 - did i miss 2.0.0.20?
