Hi Jim, so sorry to leave this issue hanging...sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees in here. The separate login is because GetSatisfaction hosts this forum, and there's no (free anyway) shared account info between Xmarks and GS. Sorry about that.
As for your corruption problem, we are very concerned and could use your help. We think we may have a bug and we're looking for reproduceable cases. If you could contact us at support@xmarks with the following information, we'd be grateful:
* The URL of this post
* Your Xmarks username
* The logfile from the browser where you first noticed the corruption (find your logfile via Tools > Xmarks > Settings if you're using Firefox)
* A list of all the browsers you're using Xmarks with (Firefox, IE, Safari, Chrome)
Thanks for your help, and sorry for the delay! If we get to the bottom of it via email, either you or I can update this thread.

It could be that a config setting got stuck somehow. Try going to about:config and searching for this setting: extensions.xmarks.successShown. It should be set to true. If not, change it from false to true and your problem should go away.
If it's already set to true, is it possible that somehow you set that page to be your home/start page accidentally?

pennyc replied on December 15, 2009 21:39 to the problem "WARNING: Do not use Xmarks to synchronize other browsers." in Xmarks:
Hi Jack,
I'm sorry you're having trouble syncing your bookmarks. I don't think your issue is cross browser sync, however. And if you've successfully uploaded from one of your browsers, then there's no way the server would not reflect the changes. So I think we need to dig deeper into what's going on with you.
We're a few days behind in our support email, but I can't find any new mail from anyone named Jack. If you could either check your spam inbox, or post here with your username and/or email address or the ticket # that was assigned to you when you wrote in to support, we can try to find your email and get you straightened out as soon as possible.
I'm sure we can get you back to where you were! I know 10k bookmarks is way too many to deal with unscrambling on your own. So sorry for the trouble and frustration.

That *does* sound annoying, and we'd love to get to the bottom of it. The best way would be to start looking at your xmarks log files, to see if you you can find which browser is the culprit. An easy way to access your logfile is via your Xmarks Settings window.
* In Firefox go to Tools > Xmarks... > Settings
* In Internet Explorer, double click on the Xmarks logo in your task bar
* In Safari, click on the Xmarks icon, then select Xmarks for Safari Settings
...then click on the "Advanced" tab, and click "Show Log File". This will open up your Xmarks logfile in a new window. You'll want to scroll to the bottom of the file and look for some commands that say "delete".
I'd start with IE. Since IE is the outlier with respect to how it treats toolbars, it's automatically the main suspect.
Good luck and please let us know what you find! If you find the offending log files and still need help getting to the bottom of the problem, you can post some log file snippets here, or email us at support@xmarks.

pennyc replied on December 15, 2009 18:22 to the question "Sync a Folder" in Xmarks:
We don't recommend setting up Xmarks on computers that aren't yours. Probably better just to access your bookmarks online at http://my.xmarks.com.
If you really want to have your bookmarks there for a long time, you can set up Sync Profiles to sync just the bookmarks you want to your friends computer. Note that this would mean that your friend could start adding/deleting/moving bookmarks in that folder too. More on Sync Profiles here:

pennyc replied on December 14, 2009 22:02 to the problem "Jumbled up links" in Xmarks:
We're very sorry for any trouble we may have caused with your bookmarks. We've received a few reports of this behavior, leading us to believe that we have a bug affecting a very small number (i.e. < 1%) of our users. Alas, all our attempts to reproduce the problem have failed. You can help us track this down! What would be really useful is if you could send email to support@xmarks with the following information:
* The URL of this post
* Your logfile from the machine that is messed up (find your logfie via Tools > Xmarks > Settings > Advanced if you're on Firefox)
* A list of all the browsers you're using Xmarks with (e.g. Firefox only, Firefox and IE, etc.)
In the meantime, please use our Restore feature to get your bookmarks back into their proper state, before things started going awry. We haven't had any reports of recurrence, so performing a Restore should get you straightened out. You can access the Restore feature via Tools > Xmarks > Settings > Restore (on Firefox), or by visiting http://my.xmarks.com and selecting "Explore and Restore..." from the Tools menu.
Thanks for your patience and help! Once we get to the bottom of this bug, we'll release an update immediately.

pennyc replied on December 14, 2009 21:48 to the question "basic sync question" in Xmarks:
Sync is a hard thing to understand sometimes, so I don't think your question is too basic. The thing to remember is that by installing Xmarks on each browser you want to sync, you're saying "make all of these the same". So whatever you do on one affects all the others. There's no master/slave. A bookmark deleted at work will be deleted at home too. A bookmark added at home will be added at work too.
Even if you're syncing infrequently (and we recommend you just leave the auto-sync enabled so you don't have to worry about these things), the changes will be reconciled, regardless of the order in which they occurred. There are a small number of conflicts that Xmarks can't figure out on its own, in which case you'll be asked how you want to fix it. (E.g. you insert a bookmark into a folder on machine A, and on machine B you delete that folder, then you sync both machines.) There should be no occasion where you sync machine A, then machine B, and changes are lost.
So the short answer is that you shouldn't worry about it, that the right thing should "just happen". If it doesn't, please let us know!
pennyc replied on December 14, 2009 21:41 to the question "Where is the foxmark setting in the safari menu?" in Xmarks:
Hi Greg,
You can find the Xmarks Settings for Safari in System Preferences > Other. You may also notice a little Xmarks icon in your MacOS menu bar at the top of the screen--clicking on that gives you a menu with opening Settings as an option.
You're correct, it won't show up in your Force Quit list. If you don't find it in your system prefs or in your menu bar, you probably haven't quite managed to install it.

pennyc set one of pennyc's replies as an official response to "Problem alphabetizing items in folders" in Xmarks
pennyc replied on December 14, 2009 21:28 to the problem "Problem alphabetizing items in folders" in Xmarks:
For the record, the Bookmark Manager is a feature of Firefox having nothing to do with Xmarks.
That said, you aren't doing anything wrong, you just have wrong expectations. The sort functions in the bookmark manager are for viewing only, they do not affect the actual order of your bookmarks. If you want to permanently alphabetize your bookmarks, you'll have to do that on your own. Or maybe there's another Firefox extension out there that would do it for you?
We've gotten a few requests to implement this as an Xmarks feature (mostly from our IE users), but it hasn't quite reached critical mass. If enough people asked for it we might consider it in a future release.
Sorry not to have a better solution for you!

pennyc replied on December 12, 2009 00:26 to the question "unable to sync/upload - password error" in Xmarks:
Hm, this may be a bug that I can't replicate, but here's some things you can do to help me figure it out:
1) Post a screenshot of your settings dialog showing the Sync pane with the Passwords option unchecked.
2) Post a snippet of your log file (you can find it in the Advanced pane of the Settings dialog) showing your last sync attempt at the bottom of the file. Feel free to snip any big icon data or confidential bookmark data.
If you've disabled password sync, it shouldn't matter what you're doing in the Profile manager. But your log and settings info will help me figure it out.
