Per reported a problem in Wuala on July 12, 2009 20:11:
Yet another problem. The title is not descriptive. I know. Moving on.
Until recently, it was possible to add more data to the upload query than there was available space. This was good for quite a few reasons, such as daily growth with a slow upload speed (never actually hitting the cap since it grows faster than i can upload), or, as i use it, to add 30 GB of files when there is 15 GB space left, of which 2 pictures and a youtube clip are new.
It was an easy way to ensure that all my new files were uploaded to the proper folders. Can't do that anymore. Now i just get a popup that tells me i need more space and some buttons, one of which wants my money.
The increasing numbers of problems are ever so slowly starting to get annoying. Wuala is less stable and less user friendly than it was months ago.
A comment on the question "Why has the minimum upload speed been set to 10 KB?" in Wuala:
So it was not lying but it was lying?
Okay, here is what used to happen.
I set the max upload speed to 1 KB.
The little status box at the bottom of Wuala showed 0 or occasionally 1 KB. Never more than that.
What was the actual speed? – Per, on June 15, 2009 22:42

Say what again? So when i set it to 1 KB, and it showed 0-1 KB in the little status window, it was lying? – Per, on June 10, 2009 19:06

More online time issues here, but with a different angle. I am not online more than maybe 80% of the time, yet my online time was shown as 100% at one point, and over 90% for a while. Recently it has slowly been decreasing again and is hovering around 90%. – Per, on May 28, 2009 11:43

I first noticed it when i wanted to upload my java files, thats a few thousand files in 15 MB. Happened again when i went to upload my main backup folder which has about 2000 files in 1.35 GB which has a bit of everything.
Before the limit to pending changes i uploaded all of it together without ever running into problems.

Actually that's the only problem i know of, but it's kind of a biggie.
Also, question. The guy said that setting 100 pending changes as the max is to avoid overflows, but before i had thousands of pending changes with no problems. Just how many pending changes would it take to cause an overflow, and could the limit have something to do with Wuala getting stuck?

A comment on the idea "More Statistics - Please" in Wuala:
Simple enough. Each file is basically uploaded 5 times, once to their server and 4 times to other users. So if Wuala can find your file 1.2 times among the currently connected users, it would be 30% maintained.
Also a rightclick option to "maintain this file now" would be great to go along with it. Streaming only works with a good download speed after all. – Per, on May 20, 2009 07:28

That would be what this is. – Per, on May 19, 2009 06:36
A comment on the question "Is it possible to upload/transfer files directly from a web source?" in Wuala:
Well yes, that's how the service works. But this way at least it would be transparent. The locally encrypted file is temporary and will eventually be cleaned up, so the only objection i can think of is the time it takes to actually download the file. Given that your common broadband connection downloads 10 times as fast as it uploads (at least in my country), this strikes me as... well lets just say a little silly. – Per, on May 19, 2009 06:34
A comment on the idea "More Statistics - Please" in Wuala:
No it won't. It will show what is being maintained, which may or may not be all of it. Which is irrelevant anyway. What i need is to know how much, in percentage, a specific file is maintained. – Per, on May 18, 2009 05:29

I clicked the i like this idea button, but i disagree (quite strongly in some cases) on the specifics. The only statistic i need - there are many others that would be nice, but the only one i need - is one that shows how maintained a given file is, and maybe an average for all my files if you can spare the thirty seconds to code that once the first part is done.-

Per replied on May 04, 2009 22:23 to the idea "let wuala observe directory for automatic uploads?" in Wuala:
Hmm well...
Having tried every single sync service i have been able to find over the past several months, i can say that i am happy with Wuala as is.
None of them ever get it quite right. Syncplicity has issues with multiple changes at a time, can't even handle a simple folder renaming without duplicating some data, Spideroak sometimes misses entire directories, Mozy and Idrive have their own issues, Zumodrive can't handle any meaningful number of files and folders at a time...
Wuala works. Sure, i keep complaining about performance and lockups and lack of transparency and so on (and boy oh boy do i have a list of issues that needs dealing with) but the bottom line is... it works. It's reliable.
Automatic watching of folders is not necessary. Whenever i add a few pictures or edit a text file or whatever i can just reupload the entire folder and only any additions and changes get uploaded. If i change folder structure i can delete what i uploaded and upload it again. It's exactly as powerful as automatic syncing, it just takes a little more work in the form of CTRL+C and CTRL+V whenever you want it updated. Considering the increased level of reliability compared to other services, and the assurance that no local files will be tampered with, i prefer it this way until the syncing technology is a whole hell of a lot more reliable. Remember, this entire "upload to the internet" thing is a new and still developing technology. It will take time before fully automatic syncing, that WORKS, becomes available.
ps the locally encrypted files really ought to be automatically deleted when maintenance is complete, as opposed to having to fiddle around with it manually.
