A comment on the idea "Erase Plazes with "0 people"" in Plazes:
Maybe you should insert a planned activity instead of a dummy activity. – Yon, on October 06, 2008 15:59

Not always a good idea, I'm afraid.
I regularly add a plaze "beforehand", by plazing myself there to create the plaze, then removing my "dummy activity". This way, I already have the plaze (with all info correct, like location on the map, added image, etc) so I can easily plaze myself there in the (near) future by SMS.
I would be pissed if I (in the future) would find out by means of a "You've created a new plaze" SMS that my effort in pre-creating that plaze appears to have been in vain just because it has been deleted in the time span between me pre-creating it and me actually using it...-

merging means that comments, pictures and tags are available to all visitors, you don't have to go looking to see if there are duplicates.
There remains the problem of those who want to say that they are either
at Heathrow Airport
at Heathrow Airport T3
at Heathrow Airport, Virgin Lounge
or even travel through them. This will become more important as finding out what your friends are doing via phone in real time becomes possible.
peSHIr replied on September 12, 2008 14:24 to the question "Mergin plazes" in Plazes:
Maybe merging is not really needed at this time.
What about just referencing a certain plaze to another one (this could be data supplied by users: "This plaze looks like a duplicate of that one to me"). This info could be shown on plaze pages, just so there are links to possible duplicates. If people then find a plaze that (many) people have designated a duplicate of another plaze, te page would mention that (like "The plazes community suggests that [Other plaze] could potentially be more relevant"). Just that.
Then you can later on try and decide what to actually do with this information, if anything. Possibly use it a voting system to determine what could/should be mergable. Who knows? Just starting to gather data like this could be good first step.

Recently tried adding/editing activities again and even though I haven't made a thorough survey of possible combinations of inputs, the ones I tried seemed to work now. Hope this means the problems with this screen are now history.
One suggestion, though: I'd rather enter 24h time than AM/PM (which I find confusing). Any chance of that changing or becoming a user preference setting...?

hi guys,
you are absolutely right, the possibility to merge plazes would be a great thing. sadly, that would mean almost re-writing all the code from scratch, and considering that, as peshir said, user-triggered merging of plazes would be a really big mess of a can of worms, there won't be any news in the near future about that. however, it always comes up also in our meetings. we won't forget about it. promise.
Dave Levy replied on September 11, 2008 09:07 to the question "Mergin plazes" in Plazes:
You need to have a merge plaze function.
Here's another example, Edinburgh Airport has 4 entries. While what you say about people doing what they want is fair, this means that the collective wisdom about places is diminished. Maybe you should store proposals to merge until a threshold is reached (the threshold could be based on Karma if you still collect it.). Otherwise ask all visitors what they think, which cold be a bit poor if people have stoped using it.

I have just suggested that this problem is solved at the other end and that filters are placed when re- reading the plazes via the web-site or feeds.

Another bit of info that might help diagnosing (still IE7/Vista). I tried editing http://is.gd/1JJI this morning. I added this activity weeks ago, but the date changed.
It was on the 20th of august (today) without time.
I tried Edit / "Tomorrow" button / Save which didn't work and left the date on today.
I tried Edit / "Other date" button / selecting tomorrow in the calender / Save which did work, setting the activity to the 21th without times.
Then I tried editing again to add the begin and end time. Saving that reset the activity to the 20th again without times.
So, I used the Edit / Other Date / Save sequence again to reset the activity to the 21th and left it at that, frustrated.
Cryptic behavior like this is worse than not having the behavior at all.
Very annoying indeed...

Just tried to change an activity that I added in advance but has moved to another date, setting a begin and end time and it updated to the right date this time, but it did not show any timing information any more after the edit. This is http://is.gd/1JJI by the way, edited from IE7 on Vista. I then tried to just add the begin and end times, but this seemed to have no effect. Based on my experience on this one activity edit I'd say the time editing seems broken at the moment.
