Some retailers (like Amazon) should start having it on 10/27; others may take until 11/3. Another early availability resource is our own site: http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596804022. Hope this helps. -Pete-

Hi Mary,
Here's what you need to do: Tap the center of your iPhone's display; a toolbar will appear at the bottom of the screen. Click the icon on the far left side (it looks like an open book). The Bookmarks page will appear...and that's the table of contents (TOC). You can scroll up or down on the TOC and tap on whichever part of the book you want to go to.
Hope that helps!

Pete Meyers replied on March 31, 2009 00:52 to the question "CS4 Dreamweaver EXCELLENT yet totally baffled on page 748" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Marc,
Happy to hear you're finding the book overall very helpful and sorry to hear that page 748 and the following pages aren't proving the same. I checked in with the author and wish I could offer some detailed advice, including a back-and-forth on what exactly you find confusing. Unfortunately, because of time constraints on his and my end we can't. I wish I had a better answer. We will, however, pay close attention to that section during the next revision of the book and work hard to bring it up to the level of the rest of the book.
Best,
Pete
Pete Meyers replied on March 31, 2009 00:42 to the question "how to get home video onto iPhone" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Nancy,
Here's what you need to do:
--Drag the .mov file onto the iTunes icon in your Dock
--in iTunes, select the movie file's name; then go to the Advanced menu and choose "Create iPod or iPhone Version".
Now you're going to have 2 versions of the movie in iTunes, both with the exact same name.
--To make your life simpler, delete the .mov file you originally imported.
Hint: the file you want to keep has the .m4v file extension. To find out which file is which, select one of the files and then choose File->Get Info. On the Summary tab, in the Kind field, you'll see the file's extension.
--Connect your iPhone to your Mac
Once your iPhone shows up in the left hand Source pane of iTunes, click its Video tab.
--In the Movies section, turn on the checkbox next to the name of the video you just imported.
--Sync your iPhone
in the lower right corner of iTunes, click the Apply button.
Hope that helps.
Best,
Pete
Pete Meyers replied on March 10, 2009 00:11 to the question "Word 2007- reproduce non-std bullets from online templates" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Simone,
I checked in with the author of Word 2007: The Missing Manual and here's some advice he came up with:
Here are the steps to change the bullet for a bulleted list:
1. On the Home tab, click the bullet drop-down menu and choose Define New Bullet at the bottom of the list (Alt+H, U, D).
The Define New Bullet window opens.
2. In the upper left corner of the Define New Bullet window, click the Symbol... button.
The Symbol window opens (see below for the fig of what this looks like).
3. In the upper left corner of the Symbol window, click the Font drop down menu.
You see a list of fonts available to Word. The Font is usually set to normal text or symbol, but you can change it to any font you want, as long as that font is on your computer.
4. Scroll through the list to find the font you want and click it.
The symbols displayed in the window match the font you choose. You may need to use the scroll bars on the right to see all the symbols for the font.
5. In the Symbol window click OK. Then, in the Define New Bullet window click OK.
You're back in your document with the bullet selected and ready to go. At this point the best thing to do is the bullet in your document and save it in a new style. That way it's available whenever you need it and you can include it in a Word template.
Pete Meyers replied on March 10, 2009 00:06 to the problem "What good is it?" in O'Reilly Media:
We've investigated further and it appears that the problem was a temporarily broken link. All the downloads on the book's "Missing CD" page <http://missingmanuals.com/cds/flashcs...> are working correctly now.

Pete Meyers replied on March 08, 2009 03:32 to the question "NOT useful for Mac so far" in O'Reilly Media:
Dear Richard,
Sorry to hear about your experience with this book. Regarding your question: "Can you give me the command conversions so I can use your book?". 95 percent of the time, you can simply substitute Apple's "Command" key any time you see an instruction in the book telling you to press the Windows "Control (Ctrl)" key. So, for example, on page 101, step 4, where the book says "...press Ctrl + Z", all you'd need to do on a Mac to make that work is press Command + Z. Another option to consider: we did publish last year "Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac: The Missing Manual".
Hope this helps.

Dan,
Please accept my apologies for the broken link. I have an email into the book's author and editor. I'm hoping they'll be able to email me the file directly to me and then I'll forward it to you while we're waiting for the link to be fixed. In the meantime, if you can email me at meyers AT oreilly DOT com, I'll forward you the file as soon as I get it.

Pete Meyers replied on February 27, 2009 22:37 to the question "Problem with Excel 2007 Missing CD downloads" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Simone,
Not a dumb question at all! Based on what you've written, I think you haven't successfully downloaded the file that contains all the practice files (which are primarily .xlsx format files). Seems like somehow you've downloaded something else.
If you want to try again, the link you want to download from is:
http://examples.oreilly.com/978059652...
Or, if you email me (meyers AT oreilly DOT com) directly, I can email you the files.
Best,
Pete

Pete Meyers replied on January 26, 2009 01:01 to the question "Descrepency in book purchase conditions?" in O'Reilly Media:
The online access lasts for 45 days. After that point you need to sign up for Safari (www.safari.oreilly.com) for continued access to the online version of the book. We've heard similar questions from other customers and have changed the message on the back of the book to: "Free online edition for 45 days with purchase of this book. Details on last page." Sorry for the confusion.

Pete Meyers replied on October 25, 2008 10:02 to the question "How do you "move" scanned photos from the "Pictures" folder into iPhoto?" in O'Reilly Media:
It's odd. I tried selecting File->"Import to Library" and that doesn't work -- you probably already figured that out. Here's what worked for me:
Open up iPhoto and a Finder window side by side. In the Finder window navigate to your Pictures folder. In iPhoto, in the left-hand Library pane, click Photos. Scroll down to the bottom of your photo list -- you should be looking at your most recent photos. Then drag the photo you want to move from the Pictures folder and drop it onto iPhoto's main window. If you want to import multiple photos, command-click to select more than one photo in the Pictures folder. To see the photos you've imported, you may need to scroll around a bit in iPhoto. Judging by my experiments, the photos get listed in iPhoto according to the date the photo file was created.
