Cover Page CommentsA few notes about recent changes to the cover page.
1) Although I have a twitter account, so far I only find it marginally useful. Now twitter is in a very prominent position on cover with no preference option to demote it. My solution is to log out of twitter. I can live with that. As a bonus, I see that the empty karma section has disappeared.
2) When a short article from the top row of the cover page category grid is expanded in-line, articles in the same category that are below on the summary list are pushed down and superimposed over the summaries for the category below. Looks a bit ugly, though it causes no usability problem.
3) I can select a different feed for the photo feed on the cover page, but the link on the cover page remains to photographr.com rather than my feed.
4) Also, I don't care for the change to the photo slot. I haven't found any photo feeds that have sufficiently dynamic, interesting content. I think that a little grid of pictures from my articles (as it was before) was much more useful.
5) There could be a configuration option to choose the content for the slot now occupied by the photo box. I.e. choose the existing photobox, the old image grid, an explore topics summary box (see (6) below), or other things like a small twitter box or a stock portfolio box.
6) Explore results could be integrated with cover. I'd like to be able to specify some topics and see the results (from my feeds) on cover in either 1) a column of summaries or 2) a little box with the number of articles for the keyword(s).

Phil reported a problem in Feedly on June 30, 2009 23:06:
Can't mark feed as readI notice that in several contexts I can no longer mark as read by clicking the unread count.
This is particularly inconvenient on category pages. I frequently scan the displayed feed contents on the category pages and then mark the feed as read. I don't want to have to visit the feed page or page back up to the top of the category page (where the sources section is lurking) to mark the feed read. Is this a bug or a feature tweak? If the latter, I preferred things the way they were before.
By the way, any chance of getting better keystroke page navigation for the cover page (cf my nits and comments in another thread).
Thanks,
Phil

Thanks for reviewing these suggestions. Special thanks for the very generous offer to make a special build, but it's not necessary. I can wait. I've lived with #1 for a while already. I only begged for emphasis.
With respect to number 8 and some of the others, What I'm aiming for is the ability to read more quickly on the cover page. Something that will work from the keyboard, but let me avoid the uninteresting articles easily. That notion is encompassed in the above suggestions, and it should still work without the x if there is n/p navigation and keystroke opening/closing of articles combined with the mark-as-read keystroke after finishing the page. So I better add one:
9. Mark as read keystroke should work on cover page
Here's two more unrelated to all that.
10. It might add additional energy to the pages with selected article to change the selection after a refresh (e.g., add a little randomness or cycle among top articles).
11. You could use a fallback for highlighted articles without an image. A feedly logo or an unrelated video or image would fit in just fine on cover or digest.

My List of Nits and WishesI haven't done one of these for a while, but here is my list of things that would make feedly more perfect (for me at least). Item 1 is the one that matters most to me.
1. Please, please give me way to have digest and cover top section articles be drawn from favorite feeds only. Articles from feeds in which I have only a modest interest should not be able to dominate the most visible part of feedly without anyway for me to stop it without completely unsubscribing from those feeds.
2. Page navigation keys should also work on the cover page (n,p,j,k)
3. Enter key on a highlighted article (when navigated to with n,p) should open the article whether (appropriately) inline, preview pane, or in another tab. Right now this works for inline but otherwise doesn't (sometimes opens the wrong article)
4. For top section articles (on category pages and the digest) it might be better to move the view so article pane is at top of screen and show more of longer articles. This would also more consistent with how ordinary articles move when expanded.
5. The preview pane is slightly low on my screen (partially hidden by the horizontal scroll bar)
6. Is there any way to allow a keystroke to close the preview pane? E.g., escape.
Thanks for consideration of these items (especially #1).

Use numbers for category keyboard shortcutsI think a useful addition to the keyboard shortcuts would be to have g+# map to the ordering of categories the user has selected (i.e., g+1 goes to the first category on the menu bar, etc.).
Phil replied on June 09, 2009 16:58 to the question "Digest top section" in Feedly:
Phil asked a question in Feedly on June 09, 2009 05:47:
Digest top sectionI've been too busy to comment for a while, but in addition to saying that I continue to enjoy feedly greatly I wanted to make three comments.
First, I'd like it if there was more tune-ability for digest page top section articles. The most frequent sources of top section articles continue to be from non-favorite blogs' recent articles with several recommendations. I want to subscribe to these popular blogs, but I don't care to have them forcing their way onto my headline section. I want the top section to have the articles I am most likely to care about. For me, those are likely to be from blogs marked as favorites.
Second, I miss having a longer list of feeds in the right column of the digest page. The featured feeds list is ok, but I'd like to my favorite feeds as well (organized by category).
Finally, it would be nice if it were possible to have in-line expanding articles that extend beyond the bottom of the screen when expanded move to the top of the screen so more of the article could be read without having to page down.
Thanks for the great product.-

Two quick suggestions1. I would like to mark as read the articles visible in a category section of the digest (and the video section as well).
2. For feeds with multiple authors I would like to see the author's name in the article summary. I can already see the name on the feed page, but something like "by Joe Schmo of The Conspiracy Blog" would be helpful.-

Replace hidden top top articles with new onesWhen an article in the top sections of digest and category pages--or an article on the cover--is hidden would it be possible to promote one of the other articles on the page into its place? I think visually and functionally this would be a nice improvement.-
