A comment on the question "Why is the EM202 currently unavailable?" in Tibbo:
When can I get a datasheet for the new component and when will it be available in the UK? – phildixon, on May 01, 2008 13:57

I did see these very words on the Tibbo website but as we are currently designing new boards with these devices can you answer please. Will the new device fit exactly in the same pin placement as before? I am a bit concerned about the phrase 'mechanically, electronically and functionally compatible ' as the website offers an alternative solution that requires two devices and says they will fit in the same board area though obviously extensive pcb rewiring would be required. Also the suggested solution requires 3V rather than 5V so requires the addition of a voltage regulator. Is there any preliminary data on the new part? Will there be a impact on device pricing? – phildixon, on April 22, 2008 08:37

Hi Phil,
This is what I have right now:
1. EM202 has been phrased out and the new version will be ready on July 1.
2. All firmware & software are the same and only a slight difference in the hardware.
3.The new version is mechanically, electronically and functionally compatible with the original EM202, so the customers don’t need to be concerned a change in his design or production line.

The thermal issues you mention do they include the unit failing to operate or simply that it gets hot? I ask because I have always had a feeling that there was some heat related problem but have never had any real proof on the problem. – phildixon, on April 18, 2008 08:31

Hi Phil! :) Nice to hear from you -- I remember you from back when I was doing support work, a couple of years ago.
Our EM202 product has been phased out. The EM202 has been in production for several years and now it is difficult to source certain components required for its production. Additionally, the EM202 had some slight thermal issues – you have probably noticed that it sometimes became quite hot when working for extended periods of time.
To solve this, we have designed a new version of the device, which will be available from July 1st. The new version is mechanically, electronically, and functionally compatible with the original EM202.
I know the lead time may seem long, and I do apologize.

We get a similar problem, EM202 stops ethernet coms and seems to need a power-off rest before working again and sometimes they dont work for longer than seconds or minutes.
The LED pattern we get is two leds on left, viewed from RJ45 both flashing quite fast, suggestive of a device lost firmware. Replace firmware via serial port makes no difference.
