IMHO a bunch of rubbish has been spouted in this thread.
Spotify have made it clear that whilst they would like to see the client on every platform they have no current plans for WM. How much clearer can they be? Do you think they have some sort of moral obligation to support WM either a) at all or b) in a time frame that suits you.

@steveflatman
Nice theory but the fact that there is an spotify mobile client for andriod means it's unlikely to be true IMHO.
Windows Mobile may be dead in the water as an OS. Unless WM7 catches up fast with the competition who is going to be using WM apart from field workers? I think spotify should write a mobile app for WM anyway, simply because any extension in reach is a good thing and, compared to writing an app for the iphone for example, it's just so easy to do...

Of course what happens in actual use may not be clear, but if you download a track over 3G/HSDPA that may actually turn out to require less bandwidth than repeatedly streaming it which could be a possible alternate user behaviour. But the issue may not be bandwidth related anyway.
Is the issue that:-
1. Apple mandated that the downloads cannot take place over 3G/HSPDA, either technically or in the approval process? (Incidentally it's really strange that itunes does not allow more to happen on the device, all the features are restricted to the computer, why? Also note how by providing no means of allowing 3rd party apps to run in the background on the iPhone, the itunes player is in a advantaged position, bad apple!).
2. Or have the carriers mandated this restriction to save their network bandwidth and then this has been passed on to app developers as a requirement?
3. Or is it a design choice by spotify? (Why?)
Anyway apart from the background play issue, which is clearly apple's fault, it's spotify for the iPhone's biggest limitation IMHO.-
