A comment on the discussion "Changes for SMS users: the good news and the bad" in Twitter:
Australian companies might not charge *you* for receiving sms, that doesn't mean they don't charge twitter for letting these messages into the country. – Sjors Provoost, on August 14, 2008 03:30

I am not so much concerned about Australia (even though I live there now): city people should dump the over priced GSM network anyway and make some more progress with wifi (mesh) networks.
My suggestion to twitter would be to sponsor projects like:
* Fonera (share your internet, get free internet everywhere)
* Meraki (mesh networks, they have some dubious things though)
* Openmesh (mesh networks)
Help them get a strong foothold in Australia and virtually nobody will ever need sms anymore.
These technologies are barely available in Australia; partially because of permit issues, partially because Australians don't want them badly enough, yet...
I you were willing to spend $1000 per customer on sms, then sending every user a $50 dollar Fonera / Meraki / Openmesh router sounds like a very cheap deal.
One day we could sing: "Schade Telstra alles ist vorbei, alles ist vorbei..." (that's what the Dutch sing when, if ever, they beat the Germans at footy).

Sjors Provoost shared an idea in Twitter on July 29, 2008 11:06:
Twitter like API for twitter search results: follow queries with any twitter client.Identi.ca just made a really smart move to make a Twitter like API for their service. This gave me an idea: search.twitter.com could provide a Twitter like API for their queries. This would allow a client like Twhirl to follow search results just like you follow friends.
It would look like this:
"friends" are queries. So @tour+de+france follows http://search.twitter.com/search?q=to...
tweets are just a copy of the original tweet (the client knows it comes from the search service, so no need to add text to the tweet)
This means you no longer need an RSS reader to follow your favorite subjects.
Sjors Provoost replied on February 01, 2008 20:08 to the problem "not receiving sms messages" in Twitter:
My sms delivery stopped a few days ago. I am not anywhere near my limit. My phone sms memory is not full. My phone is on 24/7 and the network reception in my city (Utrecht, Netherlands) is excellent.
I can probably fix it by sending a text message to the UK number, but this exercise is getting a bit expensive. It would be great if I can see and fix this problem, like Morghus suggests.
Is it possible to:
1 - make Twitter send an email a bit before it is about to turn off sms service
2 - allow one to go only and click "please try again" at which point twitter will sent a test message
That would be really cool.
Cheers,
Sjors

Sjors Provoost reported a problem in Twitter on December 22, 2007 19:10:
No sms after 17-12 in MexicoI use my Dutch cellphone on the Mexico phone network. Until 17-12 I received all my tweets by sms, but it has been silent since then.
I am not over the 250 limit (at the moment). I can still receive sms from others normally.
