Hello. It's my understanding that even with a protected or private account:
a. you can still be found by people who know your email address through Twitter's Find-and-Follow feature
b. You can also be found via Twitter's User Search because it searches through what's written in the profile Bio rather than your actual tweets.
So protecting the account doesn't stop people from finding you; it only protects the actual tweets that you've sent. Protecting the account also doesn't protect your Bio, your list of friends, list of followers, or tweets that you've tagged as favorites
The main "hassle" that comes with protecting an account is that you'll need to approve each person who wants to read your profile.
Having said all this, I like your suggestion about giving users a setting that allows them to opt out of the search engines. This doesn't stop people from reading your tweets once they've found your account, but at least you're not indexed forever on a third-party site.

And both of you have missed my point. Sigh.
The point was that I wanted a setting that says, "Twitter, please don't disseminate my information to other sites." That's all. I don't mind people on Twitter being able to find me, communicate with me, and so on. I just didn't want people everywhere *else* to discover my Twitter account. "Protecting" my profile does that, but also makes things difficult for other Twitter members who *are* looking for me.
I guess I'm going to have to search for another service. identi.ca is coming along, I hear.
