I was finally able to solve this!
My work computer has been fine, but my home computer kept popping up a message that said that a new sync file had been uploaded and asked me what I wanted to do (merge, cancel or download). Nothing that I would do could get xmarks to cooperate. When I opened the xmarks settings, I kept seeing that sync failed (error 3)
I tried:
- merge
-download
-force download from the app
-uninstall and reinstall xmarks
-uninstall xmarks, uninstall firefox and reinstall both
-backup bookmarks and restore in firefox
-looked for 'places' files but couldn't find them
Finally, I did this:
SOLUTION (for me)
1) made sure that my bookmarks were on the xmarks server by going to tools>xmarks>my xmarks in firefox
2) went to bookmarks>organize bookmarks and manually deleted all my bookmarks
3) went to tools>xmarks>xmarks settings and went to the advanced tab
4) selected the 'download' button next to 'force overwrite of local data'
Success!
