    Google Reader starred items?
Does EventBox support showing Google Reader's Starred Items?

According to the Help, "favorites" are supported:
    http://thecosmicmachine.com/eventbox/...

In the section on limitations, there is no mention of not showing the starred items folder:
    http://thecosmicmachine.com/eventbox/...

However, in my EventBox, I have no starred items folder. My feeds are present in their folders, and I can star an individual item, but I can't see all of my starred items at once.

I want to star items, not flag them, so they sync with Google Reader. I also use Byline on the iPhone, and I want to be able to star an item there then read it later in EventBox, much like how clippings work between the Mac and iPhone versions of NetNewsWire.

I actually wouldn't mind if Flagging/Starring was the same thing. Google Reader and Twitter both use the Star icon as their favoriting system, and I don't need "flags" on top of that. In fact, when I use NetNewsWire, I ignore their Flagged area too and only used Clippings.

I'm at L11 now and not sure I'll get any further. I'm trying to remember at what point the Freeze gets unlocked, because the last couple of patients before that was when I really started to notice it being ridiculous, then getting the Freeze helped me a bit but now I'm back to feeling like it's only luck when I win.

Higher levels needs more balanced difficulty
I'm getting frustrated with the unbalanced difficulty of Dr. Awesome. I just had a patient die when the following happened: two out of three sections were won when a freeze power-up appeared, then proceeded to lose five times on the final section (and no freezes appeared during this time). It's pretty ridiculous when you can only have a chance of winning a level if a specific power-up appears and you're lucky enough to get it, and while that might not be technically true, it's how I feel right now.

The problem for me in describing this is that most of the following points, in isolation, isn't that bad, but combined things get too frustrating.

    1) The bacteria are always chasing you along the edges.

    2) The large viruses seem to always be firing with deadly accuracy, which you can only prevent by staying on the edge.

    3) The viruses seem to love to group together, making it difficult to cut off a section separating them. Instead you're always cutting along the edges until you have a large clump of viruses, no room to move, and still 20% to cut away to win.

    4) You're always running out of time, so trying to deal with 1-3 tends to mean one mistake and you're dead.

    Here's what I suggest.

    1) Whenever a section (perhaps over a certain percentage) gets completed, "zap" the edges to remove all bacteria. That way if you make a hail mary cut across the middle and manage to make it you don't get killed because you missed the bacteria coming along the edge as you were dodging in the middle.

    2) Relatedly, whenever you get hit the bacteria should zap so you have a moment to get your bearings. There's been many times I move to cut, get shot by a virus, then a second later I respawn and get hit by a bacteria and die.

    3) I'm half convinced the Quickness and Slow power-ups don't actually do anything. The only things that are useful are Freeze and Shrink (and these two can often still be useless if you all the viruses are clumped together), and Time is always useful. At higher difficulties, I feel like every power-up I manage to get to should be beneficial and right now I just get upset that the real useful ones aren't showing up.

    4) This is the main point: More diversity in how viruses behave. There should be at least one virus that hates to be near others of it's kind, so the clumping isn't always a problem. Perhaps one virus that never shoots, another that shoots but has no bacteria, etc. One virus that only comes in small size and not large. Perhaps one where you can get hit without taking time damage (but the clock can still run out naturally). Maybe some levels require only 50% cut away to win the level? Right now it feels like I'm fighting the same thing all the time with a "skin" change. And by altering the viruses behavior more, it allows you to keep all the challenging stuff like shooting, bacteria, grouping, etc. without forcing it all on you all at once.

Anything you folks can think of to reduce the frustration would be appreciated. I don't mind a challenge, but I'm losing my friends and family out there!

A comment on the update "A fork in the road (An important announcement about I want Sandy)" in I want Sandy:

    raven
I can understand that Rael would want that feature in place first, but I imagine there are many, many users who do not know that Sandy is going, and the longer it takes to fully announce to everyone what is going on, the shorter the time will be to the December 8th shutdown. I already think two weeks is barely sufficient time for those who depend on the service, but let's say the full announcement goes out next Monday -- that's only a week then. At the very least, the closing date should be pushed out. Whenever the full info goes on Sandy's homepage and emailed, that's when the clock should start.

As I mentioned in an earlier message, this doesn't affect me personally, I'm advocating this for the people who heavily use Sandy and rely on it, who are most likely mostly interacting with Sandy by email and have no idea what is going on. – raven, on November 25, 2008 21:06

    raven
I'm a fair newcomer to the Sandy service, and I was using it to augment my use of Cultured Code's Things applications for Mac OS X and the iPhone, so I'm not too heartbroken over this announcement. I already have an escape route of sorts.

And what really attracted me to Sandy was the ability to get reminders through Twitter; I thought the Twitter interface for setting/getting reminders worked better for me than email as I'm always fighting my email inbox anyway. So I'm hoping that Twitter can integrate some of Sandy's features without losing it's own simplicity.

That said, this seems really harsh. Maybe it's the Thanksgiving holiday and the oncoming seasonal end of year rush that follows, but it feels like things are going to get shuttered off rather quickly. It would have been kinder to the long standing users of the service to wait until after the holidays to shut things down. But I guess Sandy is just giving her "two weeks notice".

Good luck to you Rael, and good luck to everyone else finding alternative services!

It is configurable. Go to Preferences, then Tasks, then look for "Show tasks with due dates" and you can increase that to up to 30 days or decrease it to "just today".

raven replied on November 16, 2008 04:22 to the idea "Sandy, how about showing up soon in an iPhone app?" in I want Sandy:

    raven
I'd like a Sandy iPhone application too, and I hope to hear a better answer as I think Yeraze dodged the question. While I grok the way Sandy works with email, for me personally it feels a little off to be sending emails although I'm pretty new to Sandy so maybe it's just me. I prefer sending things by Twitter but I love the idea of a dedicated iPhone app.

It occurs to me that perhaps you could invert the model Remember the Milk used for their iPhone app -- they make their app free but it requires a paid pro service. You could keep the Sandy service free (which from my reading here I believe is your plan) and charge a nominal fee for an iPhone app.

    I hope you consider it!

Placemarks on iPhone don't have a link to associated Placestream
One of the things I like about Brightkite is I can create Placemarks of areas I go to often and areas I'm interested in. On my Mac, I can go to my Placemarks, select one, and read the associated Placestream to see what's going on in that area.

On the iPhone I get my list of Placemarks, but no way to quickly read up on their Placestreams. It would be nice if, in addition to checking in, I could get a link from my Placemarks to their Placestreams.

One option is to get a second iPhone or iPod touch. :)

As I understand it, once you've bought an app, it's tied to your account, any one iTunes Store account can sync to any number of iPhones or iPod touches. Each iPhone or iPod touch will have a separate data backup, you're not sharing the data the apps use, just the apps.

I should have made clear I had already read the updates and knew the feature was currently disabled. My question was more in the "how would this have worked before the disablement" and/or "how do you expect this to work once the feature is restored." With luck, either it will "just work" in the same way as an Address Book export, or perhaps Tapulous can offer a similar "tell us what fields you don't want sent" feature. – raven, on July 20, 2008 18:09

Friend Book and private fields of the me card
On the Mac OS X Address Book, if you go into Preferences and select vCard, there is an option to "Enable private me card". When enabled, you can edit your personal card and uncheck any line of information you don't want to share.

This could be useful if you don't want to share a birthday, or if you want to have your home address in your card, but not share it with business contacts. Once you've decided on what info you want private, you can export your vCard, and that private info will not be in the exported copy.

However, viewing the info on your iPhone is not any different. It's still your information, of course, it's just private if you export to send to another person. And Apple doesn't provide a way for you to give your vCard to another person using only the iPhone so until now it hasn't been an issue.

Now there's Friend Book and my question. Are the "private fields" of my vCard set in such a way on my iPhone that if I were to do the sharing feature of Friend Book the card the recipient gets would match an exported card from Mac OS X's Address Book? Or would the recipient get my "whole card" including the marked private fields?

    Friend Book Face Dialer enhancements
In the Friend Book quick face dialer page, I'd like to see the following enhancements:

    1) When you first open this page, you see nine blank pics for you to edit. Let's say you edit the page and only add three contacts. The next time you visit the page, Friend Book should only show you those three contacts and not the blank ones until you go into edit mode.

    2) Once you had a contact to a particular "square", I can't find a way to make that square blank again. Originally I had my three contacts on the top row. Once I decided I didn't want to fill all nine spaces at this time, I wanted to change it to a diagonal listing using top left, middle center, and bottom right. But before I could do this, I'd have to clear the top middle and top right pictures. When selecting a contact a "Clear Square" button would be useful.

A comment on the question "Setting Twitter location" in Tapulous:

    raven
How does the tweet get to Twitter? If it goes through Tapulous first, you're already noting the location for the Nearby function. It seems to me that you could check the location against the last tweet made from Twinkle, and if they match, don't send any location info to Twitter, but if the location is different from the last Tweet, send the info and update the location accordingly.

    I'm sure my idea has it's own problems though. :) – raven, on July 19, 2008 17:39

raven replied on July 19, 2008 17:29 to the question "Handshake sending my contact info to strangers!" in Tapulous:

    raven
I haven't used the Handshake feature yet, but I'm thinking about the Apple Remote app and wondering it that might present a possible solution. For those who haven't downloaded and used Remote yet (you should, it's free!), it allows your iPhone or iPod Touch to control a iTunes or Apple TV in your local Wi-Fi network.

Before it can do this, you connect Remote to the library by putting Remote in a "Add Library" discovery mode. In this mode, the iPhone will present a four digit passcode, which you then enter on the iTunes / AppleTV library you wish to control.

Perhaps when Friend Book finishes the exchange of cards, rather than presenting the card, it instead prompts for a code. The receiver then asks the giver for the code on the phone, and once entered, allows the received card to be displayed. Without the code, no information is retained.

So the steps would be as followed, mostly the same as now:

    1) Place two iPhones together.
    2) Perform a gentle handshake gesture.
    3) Exchange cards through the cloud. Each person gets a code to give to the other to allow the other to see the exchanged card.
    4) Enter code, review exchanged cards and save.

Does this sound possible and would it prevent the problems that have been mentioned in this thread?
