This can be done right now, but the workaround is sort of involved.

Ryan D Johnson replied on March 05, 2009 01:56 to the question "Why wont i receive texts when im offline?" in innerfence:
Here's what happens if you don't hit the home button:
Infinite SMS stays connected to Google, receiving messages until ...
The device goes to sleep with no warning, so the connection to Google isn't cleanly closed, meaning ...
The next time you receive a message, Google tries to deliver it to Infinite SMS (which isn't online). That particular messages is lost, but ...
Google realizes Infinite SMS isn't online anymore and queues up future messages until ...
(1) You log into gmail web or google talk anywhere or ...
(2) Infinite SMS reconnects and retrieves the offline messages.
In version 1.4 (under review by Apple right now), we've fixed it so that Infinite SMS disconnects cleanly as soon as the screen is turned off. Then, if the device does not go to sleep (because the iPod is playing, or it's plugged in, or whatever), Infinite SMS wakes up every 30 seconds and makes a brief connection to Google, checking for offline messages.
Also, you said you gave all your friends the (406) number, but you don't necessarily get the same (406) number when you text every friend. You need to text them the first time, they will get your message from a (406) number, then they can add it to your contact or whatever and send you messages at the number *from that phone* from then on.
Google has not documented the messages delivery stuff, it's just what we've been able to figure out. I hope my more technical explanation helps you understand what's going on.
The summary is that there's no set amount of time to recover from Infinite SMS going to sleep; it has to do with when you receive your next message (which will not be delivered).

You probably need to unlock your google account.
Try these steps:

Currently there's no easy way to send free messages between to iPod/IPhones that are both using Infinite SMS.
We're going to make changes in future versions to make it easy.
You can do it now, though, if you're willing to jump through some hoops.

Ryan D Johnson replied on March 03, 2009 15:38 to the problem "not "infinite sms" if there is a limit, REMOVE ERROR 9!!!!" in innerfence:
Hi, Shawn.
There's not an absolute limit to the number of messages, just to the rate at which you can send messages. If you're hitting SMS_ERROR_9 you send more messages that 99.9999% of other Infinite SMS customers, and you're probably better off just paying for an unlimited texting plan on your cell phone.
If you're having trouble getting your offline messages, you should follow these troubleshooting steps:

Landscape mode part of our 1.3 release, currently under review by Apple. You can read about it here:

Hi, Akala. Are you sure you sent that through Infinite SMS? Messages sent through Infinite SMS should come from a (406) number and look like ordinary text messages. – Ryan D Johnson, on March 03, 2009 00:17

Hi, Dan.
Check out this other thread where people are discussing this problem. We think it might have something to do with the carrier or the specific model of phone.
