Ahh, I see... so it's more of a matter of priorities for you.
I do understand that... my original account was one of the first 2000 public members, so I have been around awhile... several hundreds of thousands of stumbles later they decide to change everything. I still use the old version because of all the changes.
That being said, I just feel they should tack this on to the list of things to do. – Richard, on December 06, 2009 17:08

Charles -
The thing is, for me at least, is I usually only like part of a person's stumbles. Nobody is identical to me, so their interests are different. For me, friends are not simply people who know me well enough to know exactly what I like - those people see me on a regular basis and can talk with me about stuff if they want. For me, friends is a way to connect with truly original people on SU, to get to content I might not normally get to - and when I share something, it is because I think that person will specifically like it... however, as I got more and more friends, I realized that - I don't remember what certain people really liked.
I just think the addition would make for a more productive sharing system.
And besides, you would not be forced to use it... you could still send things to whomever you wanted. This would simply suggest what you might want and might not want to send to someone. – Richard, on December 06, 2009 16:36

How do you think SU knows what to stumble for you? The coding would not be too difficult - simply link the persons name with their tag cloud - putting a percentage estimation of interested based on a persons tag cloud and/or personal tagging interests. For instance, if they REALLY like photography and they REALLY like animals, then a page with those two tags would be a 100% interest possibility. Likewise, if a person REALLY likes photography, but has never thumb up an animal picture, or has never tagged anything as "animals" - sending them a picture of an animal with photograhy AND animals would be a less likely interest percentage.
Furthermore, the amount of stumbling I do is too vast for me to be constantly checking my subscriptions favorites pages to see what the uploaded lately - especially since, i might only like a certain aspect of that stumblers favorites. I make friends with interesting people who I think will send me interesting things that I haven't stumble yet - this would help strengthen SU relationship, by eliminating superfluous shares. This has nothing to do with be a social network, but it does increase the efficiency.
Also, what I just said made me think of another thing - If they were to incorporate this, it would be WONDERFUL if they could black our a persons name if they have already thumbed the page up or down. Even my best friends who actually know me send me stuff ALL the time that I have already reviewed or seen - some days I wake up with 30 stumbles sent to me and I have already seen 25 of them. – Richard, on December 06, 2009 16:27

Yes, i just brought JFK into this! and he says "ask not what stumblers can do for you, ask what you can do For Stumblers!!!"

I am assuming the op mean "interest" and not "topic"
I would agree with Charles, but I think that bird watching is most specific than just pictures of birds or info about birds.
I am not a bird watcher myself, but I am assuming there are websites that give helpful tips and what not.
I see no reason not to include this as an interest.

The problem with using the tag cloud is that in order to know if a person would like the site you are sharing, you would have to go to their page, see if that is one of their big similarities, go back to your shared site, and then send it...
this would make it so that you can maintain a closer connection with the friends youve made by making it easier to send them pages they will really enjoy.
Maybe when you scroll over a name in "share" drop down (in the SU bar), a tooltip could pop out to the side with their tag cloud as it does in their prophile. – Richard, on December 03, 2009 15:24
Richard shared an idea in StumbleUpon on December 03, 2009 15:06:
"Smart Sharing" - for sharing links with friendsOne problem I have found with my friends sending me pages, is that many of the people I am "friends" with do not fully understand the things I would appreciate. I will get something from someone and be entirely unimpressed, however, if I go to their favorites, I am reminded why I chose to be their friend.
Therefore, I think that a "smart sharing" system should be implemented. Meaning, that when I click "share" on my stumble bar, the names of people who would be interested in the site would be highlighted (based upon the tags and interests, and the level of interest they have in them). By using a color like Green you could indicate a strong appreciation, yellow would mean moderately interested, and red could mean slightly interested... leaving the people with no interest in that topic un-highlighted.
Of course you would still be allowed to send links to whoever you wanted, no matter what... But I think this could help eliminate superfluous stumbles sent by internet friends who aren't quite sure how interested I am in something.

BAN Corporate Stumble AccountsI won't name names this time, but I have noticed a rise in the number of TV channel websites and other media conglomerates creating stumble accounts and thumbing up every page on their website.
One television network, that rhymes with "dextra" has ALL thumbs downs on their reviews page, because nearly every individual stumbler that comes across their page agrees with this.

A comment on the problem "I don't like the new interface" in StumbleUpon:
but Erick, that is what I was saying - it is still being developed, and the features that people want back (like the similarity graph) are being created and placed into the new format. I am simply saying that the reason they have these feedback channels is because they want to know what you like about both so that they can build a a near perfect version – Richard, on October 23, 2009 15:26

feedback back box is messed upthe feedback box is doing something really weird... it wont let me highlight things correctly, the first line of text is cut off above the waiste (so to speak)... the script needs to be fixed or something, because if i mess u something i bassically have to retry entirely... also i think its partially because the mouse and the text boxes do not interact well
Richard replied on October 21, 2009 22:33 to the problem "I don't like the new interface" in StumbleUpon:
The fact of the matter is, like every other site where people have profiles and information, after a while you will simply get used to it and use it just as often. Look at a site like facebook -- less than a year ago they completely revamped their site and nobody liked it... in fact millions of people said they hated it. But facebook kept it and people learned to like and use it. The thing that SU is doing that FB did not, is listening to their users -- all the stuff people are complaining about they will work to make the most acceptable to everyone. I am still using the older version until they really work out all the kinks and oddities of the new version, however, just be grateful that the SU comminuty is pro-active enough that we all take time to throw our two cents in - that is something no other site of this size has, which is why SU will remain top notch.
