rmatei asked a question in New Relic on December 02, 2008 05:10:
Help me understand the physical memory calculation. As my app's gotten bigger I've started running into memory problems. I want to be able to keep an eye on it just using RPM.
I'm running on a small shared Joyent Accelerator with 512 MB of RAM under OpenSolaris. Memory use as reported by RPM has gotten as high as 490MB with no apparent slowdown. Right now (low load) RPM is telling me I'm using 44MB. Doing prstat -J gives me:
PROJID NPROC SWAP RSS MEMORY TIME CPU PROJECT
3 9 9828K 15M 0.0% 0:02:39 3.1% default
0 36 238M 157M 0.5% 5:03:51 0.0% system
Here's what I want to know:
- How are those measurements related to each other?
- At what threshold can I expect the app to become very slow because of lack of memory?
- At what threshold can I expect the server to become unreachable through SSH because it's out of memory? The main reason I got New Relic was to avoid this happening again.
