Unfortunately, we don't offer photo attachments in our message system (they can introduce viruses). We urge you NOT to use your personal email to send a photo until you are certain you are dealing with a trustworthy person (to keep your email address private). You can set up a scrapbook on TBD and set it to viewable only by your TBD friends, or send a link to another site that features a photo of you.

Yes, it was solved as I indicated, months and months ago. The problem was with closed accounts -- the membername still appeared on friends' lists of remaining members, if any, but since there was no longer a profile associated, there was nothing to click. Now the membername disappears from friend lists when the account is closed.

Linda, my sympathies to your family on this unwanted intrusion into their lives.

The first thing I would do is report it to Snopes.com. And of course feel free to post about it on TBD, making clear (as you've done here) that you want it NOT to be shared/passed on but you run the risk of drawing more attention to it.

We really are trying to understand how this can be happening to you. Can you specify what operating system you are running (we assume it's a version of windows since you mention IE but we need to know what version of Windows exactly) and the version of IE and Firefox that you are using. Thanks.

The engineers have confirmed - we are not serving the "site down for maintenance page." Your response doesn't make it clear to me, did you clear your cache? You may need more than a simple refresh.

TBD had an almost-24-hour outage that began Thursday night February 26 as we moved to a new hosting service and were not able to resume service as planned until late Friday. While we have some continued performance issues since Friday night, the "site maintenance page" has only been up for brief periods since then, and none today (Monday). Unless you happened to hit during those brief periods, I suspect the page is cached. Hit refresh, and/or clear your cache and that should solve it.

Sorry to sound unsympathetic, but the link to Help is on the front door. I am not aware of similar sites that have a "quit" button. If we were just a social network, it would be simpler (just deleting the account/profile). But because so many of our members post content in discussions and elsewhere, removal takes an extra click. – Robin, on January 20, 2009 01:16

It's in at least three places: Click on any group you have joined, and there is a link in the left hand column "Stop receiving alerts for new activity in this group."

Or in the alert itself, there is a "stop alert" on the lower right.

Or, in your message center, click on the settings link on the left and then "manage your alerts."

There is no global way to turn off those alerts.
