Skype keeps crashing on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6

Every so often Skype will just crash. Also my messages say 'Pending' and take ages to arrive. In both directions. thirdly, sometimes the smiley window takes a very long time to appear after i click it, or just never appears (fixed after a restart of the app).

Overall I am finding my Skype experience to be very buggy indeed.

It's not obvious that this is the case - it would be nice if a) the user was told, explicitly, and b) it did more - eg access FB notifications.
