This happened with my XPS M1330 and I had to get a new power adapter. That fixed the problem immediately. I had the same exact problem that you do and it was not a motherboard issue at all.

I have found a partial solution to the problem. I simply set the power management options to never dim the screen and to simply turn off the screen instead. I know the computer screen never dimmed previously with my Vista install, so perhaps the M1330 cannot dim the screen like this. -

When my screen dims after a couple minutes, it won't undim without either adjusting the power cord or making the computer sleep and then waking it up. I've updated most drivers, but the Intel Driver for the GM965 Express Chipset says it's not compatible with the operating system. Any help?
