RYann reported a problem in The CocoaBots on January 31, 2009 22:18:
Relaunch problem concerning the Switcher of HyperspacesNot new, but still present in version 1.0fc2a, there seem to be a subtle bug in the Switcher.
How to see?
- standard config with 4 Spaces
- run Hyperspaces... use as much as you want... then quit
*BEING IN ANOTHER SPACE THAN #1* (being in Space 3 for instance)
- relaunch Hyperspaces
=> The Switcher is in problem (a part of it thinks to be in Space 1, another part thinks to be in Space 3):
- Background of Space 3 is displayed at relaunch (OK)
- Opening the Switcher highlight Space 3 (OK)
BUT
- Every Spaces, except Space 1, can be selected in the Switcher (not OK)
- Even worse, you can select the current Space 3 itself (nto OK)
This seem to show that a part of the Switcher algorithm thinks the current Space is #1, and not the right #3 that is displayed...

Yes, I can imagine.
Nevertheless the above mentioned SpaceStation v0.3 was not so long to change backgrounds? Maybe I didn't guess correctly its underlying method.
On the other hand, this "long" time would be another reason to combine both approaches as imagined above?
1) Current Hyperspaces approach with a window "above" the desktop.
2) Meanwhile, and not as quickly, the standard desktop would be updated and after this you could remove Hyperspaces window?
So easy when we write, but certainly so difficult to implement! ;-)
RYann gave praise in The CocoaBots on January 29, 2009 18:09:
Six new user preferences? As consequences of my bunch of recent suggestions ;-)
http://getsatisfaction.com/thecocoabo...
http://getsatisfaction.com/thecocoabo...
http://getsatisfaction.com/thecocoabo...
http://getsatisfaction.com/thecocoabo...
I would love to see those new preferences in the forthcoming releases of Hyperspaces:
1* Icon of Hyperspaces: Menubar / Dock / Both (a list of choices).
2* List Spaces: Menubar / Dock / Both.
3* Access to Spaces preferences from Hyperspaces: Menubar / Dock / Both / None.
4* Display current Space number: Menubar / Dock / Both / None.
5* Click on Hyperspaces Dock icon to open Spaces.
6* Change standard background.
To summarize these new features that could be enabled by the above preferences:
1) This would enable the user to get the Dock icon, concerned by those new features.
2) Would give another useful way to select a space (right-click on the Dock icon).
3) In other words: the possibility to add "Spaces preferences..." in Hyperspaces menubar and Dock menus.
This would give the only missing entry in Hyperspaces menubar icon compared to Spaces menubar icon.
This way, one could get rid of that one and save one precious menubar slot!
4) Would make visible the current space number in the Hyperspaces icons
- menubar icon: as does the Spaces menu bar.
- dock icon: using a badge as Mail.app for new mails number for instance.
5) Would give the same behavior than the Spaces Dock icon.
A left-click on Hyperspaces Dock icon would do the same as a left-click on Spaces Dock icon: opening the fullscreen Spaces view.
Associated to the previous suggestions, this would definitely give the opportunity to get rid
of Spaces Dock icon since Hyperspaces Dock icon would become a better replacement!!! ;-)
6) Would be a tricky answer to be compatible with menubar transparency and third-party tools changing the current desktop background.
Please please please ;-)
RYann shared an idea in The CocoaBots on January 29, 2009 17:55:
A trick to translucency of MacOS menubar and HyperspacesI read that you have problem to get the background image from Hyperspaces go "under" the menubar like translucency of standard desktop background images in MacOS.
The consequence is indeed that the transparency effect of the menubar let the user see
its "old" background image (from the MacOS preferences) and not Hyperspaces ones.
Another drawback of displaying Hyperspaces background "above" is that some third-party
tools changing the Desktop background become invisible (some of them: Wallsaver displaying the Screensaver as desktop background, or DockArt showing the currently playing iTunes album cover as desktop background).
To avoid this second drawback, Hyperspaces currently proposes a user preference to manually stop drawing its Desktop backgrounds. But it's a pity.
To address both problems (menubar transparency and "real background" invisibility)
I discovered a while ago a very small program, that was a prototype, but seems to give
an answer: SpaceSation v0.3 is likely to change background from space to space by changing the standard desktop background from the preferences. see http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/f...
Maybe this would make Hyperspaces nice animation effect impossible, but this would solve
the two other problems?
As a conclusion, and that's my idea (hoping this is reasonable): maybe taking this into account could lead to some solutions?
1- propose a preference switch in Hyperspaces between
"Change standard background / Use superposed background".
2- or even better: merge the two solutions to have all the advantages.
(a) Hyperspaces would change the standard background to solve the transparency effect with the menubar (and would restore the standard background when quitting).
(b) Hyperspaces would (also) draw a superposed window to display the nice transition effect when changing space. (That feature could remain a user switch as currently).
(c) But after the transition effect, Hyperspaces would close its superposed window to let only see the standard background (changed to the same image) and therefore compatible with every other tools transforming the background.
Tricky, but possible?
RYann replied on January 29, 2009 17:26 to the question "Translucency with different pictures?" in The CocoaBots:
@Tony Arnold, happy to see that you will go on trying finding a solution to that drawback.
But I must miss something in you demonstration: if I switch to another application (or not), I still see the System Desktop image in translucency under the menubar, and the Hyperspaces Desktop image on the screen.
The only case were the system Desktop doesn't reappear under the menubar for me is the Space number 4 of the current Hyperspaces version which is locked and not customizable. For this space #4, the translucency is simply off!
RYann shared an idea in The CocoaBots on January 29, 2009 17:12:
Growl notifications for HyperspacesIf Hyperspaces could add usual (and highly customizable, even to simply disable) calls to Growl to notify a space change, this would be a simple but very nice new feature.
RYann shared an idea in The CocoaBots on January 29, 2009 17:07:
Click on (future) Dock icon of Hyperspaces to open SpacesWith the idea of (optional) Dock icon, another nice behavior would be nice:
clicking on the Dock icon could (as it does for Spaces icon) open the fullscreen view of Spaces (it seems to be a simple launch of Spaces app).
With previous ideas of Dock icon & Numbering,
http://getsatisfaction.com/thecocoabo...
http://getsatisfaction.com/thecocoabo...
this would make it possible to have Hyperspaces app and icons to become a total enhancement (and replacement) of the current Apple Spaces icons I have in the menubar and Dock.
P.S. If this mimic behavior of Spaces dock icon could be the one of Hyperspaces by default.
Hyperspaces could become even more "hyper" by proposing a user preferences:
"Dock menu click opens: Spaces / Switcher".
RYann shared an idea in The CocoaBots on January 29, 2009 16:58:
Numbers in the icon(s) of HyperspacesLike Apple icon of Spaces in the menubar, this would be nice to have an (optional) number indicating the current Space in the icon of Hyperspaces:
this way, one could definitely get rid of Spaces icon in the menubar.
(As soon as the "Spaces preferences..." shortcut is also integrated next to "Preferences..." in Hyperspaces menu).
And, following the idea of optional Dock icon
http://getsatisfaction.com/thecocoabo...
this optional numbering could also be badged in the Dock icon (as Mail.app for new messages, or like very beautiful badge ideas of Mail Badger http://tonyallevato.com/software/mail...).
RYann shared an idea in The CocoaBots on January 29, 2009 16:48:
Hyperspaces could show an (optional) Dock iconWouldn't it be good to have a user preference to choose where to see Hyperspaces icon (and action menu): Menubar / Dock / Both.
For those who prefer access the actions through a right-click on the Dock, it would be nice, and it would allow to save precious space in menubar for items.
Moreover, an extra action could then be added (to the Dock icon only):
drag'n'drop of an image to the Dock icon would directly set this image to the current Space.
RYann replied on January 29, 2009 16:36 to the question "Some little details to blow away?" in The CocoaBots:
@tonyarnold, may I give my opinion?
Even if the price (compared to free!) has to be taken into account, it's true that some usual "user-friendly" details, but typical of current Mac applications, could be integrated in Hyperspaces:
- Simple Drag'n'drop to Hyperspace app icon: to change the current space background in one clic.
- Propose icon in the menubar and/or in the Dock: two ways to reach Hyperspaces actions.
- Growl notifications: to have an (optional) confirmation of a Space change.
Besides these little interface details that Hyperspaces don't have, I must say that the advantage remains clearly with Hyperspaces (from my point of view), but the other app is free indeed and if it is lighter, it is not very far away! (at least for the main purpose: having different background and easily switch to them).
I will propose this bunch of suggestions as "ideas" ASAP ;-)
RYann asked a question in The CocoaBots on January 29, 2009 16:36:
Some little details to blow away?@tacojohn how do I make Hyperspaces blow SpaceSuit away? Is it speed, or price that's a problem?
RYann replied on January 29, 2009 13:52 to the question "Private build not available any longer?" in The CocoaBots:
Hi Tony,
The mentioned link http://tinyurl.com/b3ym6d to build 563 is so quikly removed from availability? sob :-(

Private build not available any longer?Look! Over there! Another slightly private build of Hyperspaces: http://tinyurl.com/b3ym6d -- Enjoy!
