I had a quick look at my illustrator help manual - it says here:
To select a group of items that are next to each other, click one; then press the Shift key and click other items to include them in the selection.
To deselect one of the items, click it again while you continue to hold down the Shift key.
Also, this functionality is definitely not working in my copy of Balsamiq

Also, did you check the Adobe programs for how they implement this feature? – Sam, on July 31, 2009 15:03

Hey Giacomo, thanks for responding.
I can only talk from my own experience, using those niche software products 'Fireworks' 'Illustrator' and 'Photoshop'. Sorry, unhelpful sarcasm there, but I couldn't help myself. It's Friday after all.
The feature also doesn't appear to be working for me either, now you mention it.
Sam shared an idea in Balsamiq on July 31, 2009 10:19:
Allow greater flexibility when selecting many objects. When selecting multiple objects, it would be nice to be able to de-select certain objects by holding shift and clicking the object in question.
To put it another way, if I drag the cursor to select objects a, b and c in an area, they should all be selected together. If I then hold shift down and click object b, then it should be de-selected and a and c remain selected.
This kind of thing would really help with editing complex mockups.
Apologies if this is duplicating an existing ticket, but I couldn't find anything that described this properly.-
