A comment on the question "Purpose of goEverywhere?" in GoEverywhere:
Feeling a bit like the point was missed. In a nutshell:
Single sign-on => no 3rd party products
Why are we relying a 3rd party products to do this? Because we don't have our own? Then what's the point of this? How secure is this really when we are relying on other's software?
So if I don't have another single sign-on software and I don't want to sign up for Meebo, then what? – saxman, on February 23, 2009 20:49

Not a problem for me. I do two things.
1. I keep a copy of all my links on a flash drive so I wouldn't lose anything there.
2. I use PasswordSafe which keeps all my links associated with usernames/passwords. Also on my flashdrive, with several backups.
I know you're argument to this will be somethings along the lines "That's what the goEverywhere is for, to manage all these logins". Sorry but it doesn't do it when I have to use things like Meebo or Zoho. That's a very poor step because I have to sign up for something else that I don't want.
The response to that comment, which I have brought up, was "We don't force you to sign up for anything". Well, ok, you don't. However, if I don't sign up then you don't have any mechanism to save my links, usernames, and passwords anyway. What do we do next, that could actually work in goEverywhere? goEverywhere does not seem to have a mechanism for touting single user login without using something like Meebo.

I completely agree. If I have to sign up for other services like Meebo, Zoho, etc. then this "single user sign on" thing has really failed. I use Symantec's Password Safe to maintain all my links, usernames, and passwords and this is far more effective, and to do things I need, I don't have to sign up for other services that I don't want. Someone here needs to speak with a customer and stop letting engineers design this.

As you can see the URL is about as high as the Meebo advertisement would be if it were opened. At the moment I don't believe that this is a Meebo issue as the same thing happens with My Open Place or any other window. But you have to have multiple windows open, with just a single window open the problem does not occur.

Just put a "What's new" icon on the start menu, perhaps on the top above the Preferences. Or next to 'About'. Once that's communicated to users I believe that those who are interested in that will use it while those who are less inclined to do so won't be bothered by the popup windows.
Every time I login I have to delete the window. It's like being prompted for passwords multiple times. Can be easily done but is very annoying. It doesn't encourage me to use the interface.

You get that I don't like Meebo. I presumed that I wasn't being too subtle about that. :)
Honestly it isn't Meebo per se, just that to get rid of the garbage that they add to the window I have to sign up with them. I refuse to do that.
It's my opinion that if you are going to create this virtual space that it's unprofessional to use these types of applications that require further creation of accounts that I didn't buy into in the first place.
I realize that I am very (extremely) picky about this kind of stuff, but the feeling I get is that the goEverywhere developers aren't being picky enough. I'm not trying to be harsh on you guys, I'm also a developer and I understand the work it takes, but someone there needs to be a bit more particular than pushing things like Zillo and Meebo.

I did see that interface, the problem is that I don't use Yahoo, I use Windows Live Messenger. The do have a web link but it doesn't work too well in the goEverywhere space.

No, nothing out of the ordinary. All I do is select the Instant Messenger icon on the desktop, this opens the Meebo window where it gives me the choice of 4, AIM, Yahoo, MySpace, MSN. I have an MSN account that I use. I sign into that which then displays the stupid Meebo blog and their idiotic advertisements (pardon my dislike for the whole Meebo puke). At that point I am signed into MSN messenger which works fine, but it's inside that Meebo window. Then I resize the messenger window to where I want it. When I then resize the container window, the MSN window snaps back to the right side of the container and resizes from top to bottom.
I hope my description makes sense to you.
