If you had read the thread properly, you would see that this type of solution did work for a while, but one of the updates broke it. – Matthew Schinckel, on September 01, 2009 00:42
Matthew Schinckel reported a problem in ExpanDrive on August 31, 2009 07:22:
ExpanDrive doesn't like more than one connection under Snow Leopard.I frequently need to have multiple connections to various servers using ExpanDrive running concurrently.
Today, after upgrading to Snow Leopard, I find that having one connection open seems to work okay, but a second connection (a) doesn't show up in the Finder sidebar, and (b) doesn't show anything other than top-level items in that volume.
If I look in Terminal, then I see all of the files I am expecting to see, but am not able to open them with `open`:
matt@arne:/Volumes/warpath/functions/default$ open .
LSOpenURLsWithRole() failed with error -36 for the file /Volumes/warpath/functions/default.
matt@arne:/Volumes/warpath/functions/default$ open updateWage.py
LSOpenURLsWithRole() failed with error -36 for the file /Volumes/warpath/functions/default/updateWage.py.
I can open a file using mate, but opening a directory does not show any files inside it in the project pane of TextMate.
If I unmount the second drive, I can then work normally on the first drive, as long as I haven't tried to open any files whilst both drives were connected. If I have, then unmounting the second drive appears to work, but the icon is still on the desktop, and the original drive isn't.
Navigating to the first mount point then shows the contents of the second mounted folder.
A comment on the idea "Don't create alert when following new user" in atebits:
Can't remember where I read it, but the suggestion for UI was to make stuff easy to undo, rather than the extra step of a confirmation dialog. Which everyone automatically clicks yes on anyway. – Matthew Schinckel, on August 06, 2009 05:27
Matthew Schinckel shared an idea in atebits on August 06, 2009 00:22:
Don't create alert when following new userFollowing from within Tweetie is great, except that having to click on the sheet that comes up after choosing the follow option under the gear menu is a tad annoying.
It seems to me that having to click OK each time is pointless: it's pretty hard to accidentally follow someone, and it's trivial to unfollow them later if you accidentally do follow them by mistake.
I'm guessing the same applies to unfollowing, but I don't do that much.
A comment on the idea "Hide dock icon" in atebits:
Personally, I've had LS as dockless for the whole time I have been a registered user: the only features I use I get at from the right-menu, and the window. So I guess I disagree with you on those points. I have also never used the Tweetie menu: the only interactions I have had (besides prefs) have been through the global shortcut keys to show/hide, and create a new tweet.
But that might just be me...
The whole issue about code signing to me is the only potential technical problem in the long run. There are solutions (which are listed in the linked post), or perhaps workarounds, but at some stage they may cause problems. – Matthew Schinckel, on August 06, 2009 00:11

You should put this as a seperate feature request. – Matthew Schinckel, on August 06, 2009 00:08

As someone who supports the idea of not having a dock icon, but also a software developer who has to deal with people making demands on them regarding features, I wanted to comment again on this issue.
I think most non-developers think that adding a feature is just a matter of writing the code to implement something, when there is a whole lot more involved in it than that. I won't go into too much detail, other than state that this change is not just a simple change to a plist file (as end-users can change this file, I have, and it doesn't work properly), and point people towards a blog post written by the author of NetNewsWire, Brent Simmons:
http://inessential.com/2009/07/30/ana...
Brent also wrote about people offering money for features:

Seriously, if you have not read these posts, then do so. It might give you some insight into the development process, and why the developers have not implemented this feature just yet.
Having said all of that, I am still in support of them adding this feature. (But, that is their decision).

Ugh. GetSatisfaction swallowed my response.
Saurabh, I think you are misunderstanding this solution, or mixing it up with other issues. As this changes a file in ~/Library/Preferences, and has nothing at all to do with the Application Bundle, it cannot possibly affect the signature of the application.

Great. This is a nice way to solve this. I would mark it as solved, but it's really only a temporary fix, but should survive updates, just not configuration changes. – Matthew Schinckel, on May 13, 2009 07:19

This would be the same as the other 'solutions' that are listed above.
And, (although I only used DockDodger), the most recent release of Tweetie doesn't work if you do this. – Matthew Schinckel, on May 04, 2009 00:01
