hi, ajk-
we actually are using our classification to fight spam.
you can read more about other spam-fighting efforts in several entries about fighting spam on the searchme blog, starting here:

that said, fighting spam is really hard, and i apologize for the spam you might find in searchme. at least you can see it and skip over it with our visual interface!

Bummed about search engine spam in our Searchme? That makes two of us!
Would you believe that after we crawl the web, nearly half of the pages we find get tossed out as useless spam? And still, it's not enough.
Our spam-fighters are working hard to detect and remove this kind of spam from the index, but there are a couple of issues.
I'll see if I can get one of spam-fighters to post here about it.

John Holland replied on April 04, 2008 16:33 to the idea "Top 10 Variety" in Searchme:
This is a really cool idea that we need to bake pretty well. There are really two pieces here:
1. The "variety" piece.
2. A "show additional results from this site" piece.
The variety piece is really for our search quality team to focus on. When is it ok to "bury" a great web page behind the first result from that site.
As for the #2, there are some navigational things to think about.
Regardless, this is a cool idea and a lot of other people agree with you. We'll work on this one, I promise!
