jamie great suggestion...I forgot to mention we live in phoenix, right in the heart of the sonoran desert, so I think heat may be a problem if I went the jacket way. I'm going to look around and see what I can find in the way of small bags, maybe something similar to Timbuk2's bike seat pack. the Web Master harness by Ruffwear is really well made so I'm thinking about the possibilty of two large bike seat packs and two small ones, attached to the harness. if I do it right I might end up with a decent modular system, where I can add/remove the large set or the small set of bags for more or less storage...-

Hey programmer#1, I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing? I'm talking about a backpack that the dog wears...not a backpack to carry the dog in (my pup is a 45lb ball of energy, I don't think it would work well, haha!).
Ruffwear sells a great looking harness (called the "Web Master") that may be my starting point, it wouldn't be hard to attach a small pack/bag to each side, sort of like saddlebags or panniers on a bike. the "Approach" pack made by ruffwear is sleek and aesthetically pleasing, it doesn't look like the crap that petsmart/petco/etc. are trying to pass off as dog backpacks, I just really hate the color selections that they offer. (my dog is dark brown with white on his belly and feet, I thought forest green, or maybe a charcoal grey/navy combo might look good on him). I'll definitely pass along my design if I end up making my own. -

Jamie you're probably right.
Nothing wrong with learning about dog goods, I bet lots of Timbuk2 customers are also dog owners, why not do the necessary research/development? -

Does Timbuk2 make a dog backpack? If not, can you?I've been looking for a good pack for my dog so he can carry his own water and such while we're hiking and out and about. I recently found one that has a fantastic design (it doesn't look like a repuposed fanny pack, which is what most dog backpacks seem to be) made by a company called Ruff Wear. They have terrible color selections and I've emailed their customer service team to see if custom colors or other colors are possible, and the response was that they won't be updating their colors for a least a year. Their packs are made in the Philippines.
My question is, can Timbuk2 make a dog backpack? www.ruffwear.com is the website and the "Approach" is the name of the bag I'm interested in. I know you guys make awesome products that would be perfect for my rough and tumble 4-legged-friend, and I'd love to purchase one made in the United States. Is this something you are capable of? I don't see why Ruffwear won't help me out with some decent colors, but I suspect it is because their packs are made overseas and are probably purchased in bulk.
