Sharon replied on November 25, 2009 16:41 to the question "How do I check in? Do I need to do that on a mobile?" in foursquare:
You can use an app if you have an iPhone or Android phone. The apps can be located on Foursquare's web site or in the app stores. You can also use SMS or mobile web (http://foursquare.com/mobile/) from most phones.
There is no dedicated way to check in from a regular computer. Foursquare employees have recommended also going to the mobile web URL for that case.

There already is a douchebag badge, but that isn't what it means! – Sharon, on November 24, 2009 04:40
A comment on the question "Fake Venues?" in foursquare:
You could be a passenger in a car or bus and be on the highway / riding across the Bay Bridge! You could say that it's a bit against the spirit of foursquare because a friend who's monitoring your checkins can't exactly join you on the highway. On the other hand, if you think of venues as a way of collecting "To-do" recommendations, it makes sense to have pages, even for places that aren't businesses. – Sharon, on November 24, 2009 04:39
A comment on the question "How to fix up spelling mistakes in locations" in foursquare:
True, but I think you can also edit a venue if you're the mayor. In my earliest days of playing foursquare, I remember repeatedly checking in order to correct typos. That goal took me all over San Francisco =) – Sharon, on November 24, 2009 04:37
Sharon replied on November 23, 2009 22:58 to the idea "Include a role for trusted Area Administrators to perform maintenance (like wikipedia)" in foursquare:
Foursquare has this: it's called superusers. Right now only levels 1 and 2 have been implemented, but all superusers can edit venue info. Level 2 superusers can merge venues as long as it's not a pair that they have just personally suggested (to minimize abuse of the system).
Promotions to superuser are done automatically, in batches every couple of weeks.

Sharon replied on November 23, 2009 04:01 to the idea "Check in from anywhere?" in foursquare:
I understand the anti-cheating sentiment, but one major distinction between Foursquare and other location-aware apps right now is that it actually welcomes a lot more people. I'm happy that I can check in via SMS and Mobile Web because I'm using a Verizon phone, which (in my opinion) didn't offer any usable phones until the recent Motorola Droid that could actually run the Foursquare app! In contrast, I believe GPS-only limits you to iPhone, Blackberry, and Android.
Sharon replied on November 23, 2009 03:58 to the idea "Check-ins" in foursquare:
I think the idea is that very few people are legitimately at some sort of "venue" while on a full laptop.
But, if you really want to check in, you can use the mobile web URL on a computer, not just a phone: http://foursquare.com/mobile/-
