what you refer to is WINE-wrapped still-Windows application - it had been noted to make weird spurious behaviour (like yet another directory rescan all of sudden never ends, etc). But this is _not_ the most important thing... Deep true reason is that once (if ever) they make it for Linux, porting it to non-x86 architectures or adapting for yet another Linux flavour wont be a problem anymore... But they don't care - it is _not_ on their plans or radar.

currently you ask user for login/password -- this is BAD idea. Try to use more modern methods, both Gmail and Yahoo Mail have it (see how vimeo does it http://vimeo.com/contacts/import )

If one clicks into https://www.shelfari.com/invitefriends he finds old, outdated, primitive method -- asking for login/password and promise "we will not" (and only from Google) - now it is lame: there are better methods, available for trusted import of addressbook from Google _and_ Yahoo at least - go to Vimeo.com, make account and look how they do it http://vimeo.com/contacts/import
