I didn't use it myself, but I know many people did and found it useful. Your claims that it is "undesirable and confusing" seem odd to me, given that it is opt-in and a simple change to make it if gets annoying.

This change removing the settings has already started to become annoying, as people "RT" each reply they made - something that is "undesirable and confusing", not in the least because it breaks the reply chain and fills the timeline with messages we would otherwise not want to see, as we *chose* not to see them.

Reinstate the option, let those who want to follow every @reply do so.
