brad reported a problem in Twitter on July 24, 2008 01:53:
Replies disappear, don't come back.My reply page is there, but there are no replies there. If you click the older link replies will be there, but once you've viewed a page those replies disappear. So after I've viewd page 2, it becomes an empty page. Page 3 will be there the first time I go to it, but will be gone from that point on. Where are the replies?
Update: It appears to only be happening in IE. Once I view a page of replies, the replies will disappear from that page on all following views. Happened on multiple machines in IE. Couldn't reproduce in flock.

mdy: Thanks for the tip. The one I spotted today was to someone I wasn't following so I've changed the setting, thanks :) However, I'm pretty sure that others have been absent recently without @user in at all, and from people I'm mutually following. I'll try and log them myself when I notice. Cheers. – Jon Tan, on May 21, 2008 12:18

Jon, are those missing @user messages by any chance addressed to people that you're not following yourself? If yes, that's the default setting for Twitter's @replies, i.e., "show me @replies addressed to the people I'm following". You can change the setting in http://twitter.com/account/notifications – mdy, on May 21, 2008 12:11

I'm also having this problem. Last noticed today, and most days to date. Cursory analysis seems to show that tweets from people I'm following starting with "@user" are not being shown in my /home.
[Ed] I should add, this is problematic to log comprehensively; if the tweets don't show I only notice when friends follow-on from a previous tweet, and I go to their page to investigate and compare.
To log this bug, it might be useful to have a tool that checks tweets from a given account are appearing in followers' streams, perhaps by timestamp.

im having a similar problem. ive never missed an update on my mobile from msgs on my twitter site until late last week when i stopped getting all the msgs delivered to my mobile. now i seem to be getting only approx 1 in 4 delivered to my device. im only in a circle of 9 people, and none of which have a heavy load of followers. it seems my whole circle has the same problem also. username is himoore.

Not sure if this is related, I have a problem in IE& (Firefox is ok) which caches the flash plugin i copied from the twitter site so you only see the twitters at the time of the first load - if you then clear out the cache and open a new window etc you get the latest comments. Is there a way to prevent IE7 from caching so i get live twitter updates?

I noticed the same behavior earlier -- new tweets were intermittently getting interspersed with older ones (though I must admit I didn't try logging out and logging back in). As of now, my Twitter "Recent" stream has stabilized somewhat, and I only see new tweets coming in. If you continue to experience this problem after Twitter announces the successful completion of the 'backfill' process, my suggestion is that you start a new thread here in GetSatisfaction to raise the issue. [ As to being a self-professed 'cyberstalker,' I can totally relate to that! ] – mdy, on April 22, 2008 09:28

Uum...what I could not figure is why the timeline was repaired and then went away again as if 'my cache' was corrupted again having tried to be repaired. Since then I have signed on and off and get different timelines each time. The last twice I have got Tweets globally and had the same timeline. What is strange is the 'yo-yoing'. As if it rebuilds but keeps hitting a faulty bit and jumps. What is amazing is that a few weeks ago I was not even a user and now I am actually concerned I cannot see the people I am following. I have become a cyber-stalker! – adrian moss, on April 22, 2008 08:51

@biz mentioned above that they are "back filling the timelines" -- which to me means they're publishing all the tweets that we hadn't seen over the weekend. That explains why they're old. Once they've finished backfilling, things will have caught up with the present once again. 8-) As to geography, I'm not sure, but my guess is that you were seeing less US-based users right then because the tweets that were being back-filled or posted were sent hours earlier -- when people were still sleeping in the US. – mdy, on April 22, 2008 08:37
