I am not positive, but I think that Microsoft requires ActiveX controls in order to download and install updates. Firefox does not support ActiveX controls. One workaround that I found helpful is to install the IE Tab add-in, which allows that tab to replicate an IE browser. Go to WIndows Update from that tab.
