Chris, "about" posts are notes and photos that you can post to a location without actually being checked in there. To do that, you would just visit that location's place page and click the "Post a note" or "Post a photo" button. For instance, I could go to the Paris, France place page and post photos of a past trip I took, etc. Since these updates aren't about what you are *currently* doing, they will not send out notifications or share to Twitter, but they will show in your user stream. Now non-about posts are just normal notes and photos that you submit while you are currently at a location and they post to where you are currently checked in. Since these are real-time updates, they will share to Twitter and notify your friends when they are posted. I hope that helps some. :) – Lesley, on October 06, 2008 15:54

Lesley, thanks for the response. I did post it privately initially, but then I realized that and changed my settings to public and re-posted the image. Looking at it again, the image is still set to private, which is odd. I'll post something again soon and report back here how that goes. – @joebird, on August 13, 2008 17:24

Joe, did you post your photo while in Private mode? If so, your settings for "everyone else" will need to be "city" or "exact" for your post to share to Twitter. – Lesley, on August 13, 2008 16:12

Did your note from July 22 cross-post to Twitter or did you manually repost that yourself? Since the updates are spaced a couple of days apart, it's possible that our system was unable to connect to Twitter and when this happens it gives up after a few seconds, so your post will not show up. If you don't mind, could you test a few notes spaced within a few hours of each other to see if any of those show up? This will help us determine where the problem is happening. Thanks! :) – Lesley, on July 28, 2008 22:28

The iPhone app should ask location services for your location everytime you post a note or photo. The thing that most annoys me about BK is having to manually checkin so my note/ photo shows up on the correct place. By the time I have gone through all that on a sketchy EDGE connection, the feeling has gone. If you do add periodic auto-checkin, make sure the user can opt out of it.

Ok, I had turned off posting of Notes because I was using something else so to make sure it wasn't on my end I took a photo and sent it in to Brightkite and it didn't get cross-posted. – Chris Pohlad-Thomas, on July 14, 2008 15:54

Hi keinoguchi, you can customize your Twitter settings to disclose whatever information you like, regardless of whether or not you are in Private/Public mode. Account Settings --> Sharing --> Customize.
I noticed your last test post did go through to Twitter okay. If you experience intermittent problems with cross-posting, this is because our system only tries for a few seconds to connect with Twitter. If they are unresponsive, then the system gives up and your posts won't share. Please let us know if you continue to have issues.
