Oh this makes sense! I was wondering what that homepage sidebar setting did. I hope this works, because it's so smart! Thanks! – Sarah Harrison, on May 12, 2008 18:32-

Opt-out of notification SMS messages for ON and OFFI would love to opt out of the notification message that is sent via SMS when I turn SMS notifications "off" (and even "on" for that matter.) It is really redundant once you've been using Twitter for over a year and you turn notifications on and off once or twice a day.
I'm trying to save on text messages during the day so I can avoid moving to an unlimited plan. I turn it off when I'm in front of a computer so I can have them on via IM, and these additional notifications really add up.

SMS confirmation for "off username" is the same as "leave username"This is a small issue, but I've noticed that when you SMS "off username" the confirmation message you get back says "You've left username's updates. Send 'get username' anytime to get username's latest update, 'follow username' to follow again."
This is incorrect, this is the same message you see when you text "leave username"
Leaving someone is not the same as turning their notifications off.-

I like this idea, because sometimes you know the first result you'll get back is going to be the right one. The more we use the service, the more we'll want to be able to shortcut to the first search result, especially since texting in the business name is much easier than the address.
Consider this example:
Yesterday I went to a restaurant/bar in Seattle called Cyclops. I know it's the only one with a name like that. I texted ?Cyclops to Brightkite. The first result was, of course, the right one. The second result was "Ace Hotel" and the third was "Kicks Hobby Japan" -- neither of those having any remote possibility of being a match. I would much rather bank on the first result being the right one than go through a needless extra step to see meaningless non-matches.
I assume there will be a confirmation message, so if we see that it chose the wrong one, we can always just send another text with the correct info. I don't see a big need to delete an accidental entry.
Sarah Harrison replied on April 18, 2008 20:01 to the discussion "How would you prefer to report Twitter spam?" in Twitter:
I am less interested in reporting spam than I am in identifying someone as a spammer as quickly as possible. If you haven't seen Merlin Mann's post at http://www.kungfugrippe.com/post/3137... check it out to see some good ideas on what statistics can be used to identify someone as a spammer.
If the email that came to me said "so and so is now following you. They have been using Twitter since... Follow x people and have x followers... " Stuff like that. Maybe even some of the other stats like %age of total posts that are “@” responses and %age of total posts that include a link, especially if most of the links are to the same site.
If this info is in the email itself, I don't have to click to visit their profile at all. I simply delete the email. (I doubt I would go through the trouble of reporting them at all. Sorry.)
Lately the amount of Twitter follow request emails I've gotten has been overwhelming, so I've just turned the email notification feature off. If the email could be more informative, cutting out the step of going to the person's profile to see if I want to follow them back, or if they're a spammer, I would be more inclined to keep it on and look at the emails.

Human readable locations - Name and/or cross-streetIt would be great to be able to check in from a cross-street. Some times I don't know the exact address, and even so, it's impossible to navigate from just an address without a cross street anyway.
A notification like "Sarah is at Starbucks on 3rd and Madison" is much more useful than "Sarah is at 1019 3rd Ave"

Import Twitters *into* BrightKite notes?Would it be crazy to import Twitters you send after checking in to a place as notes on that place (in the what's going on area)?-

What's with all the outages and dropped Tweets?Throughout the day, Twitter comes and goes. Some tweets get through, some don't. You might see an error, you might not. Even when the site appears to be functioning, you find out later you missed a friend's tweet. Additionally, SMS notifications are just as unreliable. Some come through, some don't. People are missing direct messages, only getting some of them. It's all very random. What is going on?
