Andrew Dickens asked a question in Tom Tom on October 08, 2008 07:54:
Tom Tom GO 910 won't power upI bought a brand new Tom Tom GO 910 from ebay about 6 months ago and have used it about 3 times, then left it in the glovebox for a few months. I came to power it up
today and the unit does nothing other than illuminate the green power LED for as long as you push the power switch. I tried to reset the unit by pushing a paper clip into
the reset switch in the connector / mounting bay but there is no change. The seller advised its a Tom Tom warranty problem, but Tom Tom won't deal with it unless I can
produce a receipt which I am unable to supply. Any suggestions for getting this thing to work?

Like most computer vendors, HP don't actually manufacture the hard drives - they are bought from mainly Fujsitu or Seagate. They are a stressed device and inccorect use or abuse can dramatically shorten their life.
However, most hard drives that are returned as 'dead' turn out to have viruses or other corruptions and the disks are fine.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I'm confused by your description - was it a brand new hard drive or a year old one? If 1yr old, I would have thought it is out of warranty. In any case, the warranty explicitly does not cover loss of personal data - no computer or software warranty by any vendor anywhere will cover this. However, all you need to do to access your recovered data is to copy them to the correct locations on the replacement hard drive.
Eg close all Office applications, then search for '*.pst' and note the name & file location. Then rename your recovered pst file to match the new one and copy it to the relevant location. Then relaunch Outlook and you should see your old data there. This information is widely available after a brief Google and actually lies in Microsoft's realm. Try here for starters:

Andrew Dickens replied on September 18, 2008 01:26 to the question "HP computer-trying to install a Dell 1100 laser printer" in HP:
This is really a Windows question rather than a HP question. You need to open the Printers folder in Control Panel and right-click on the Dell to set it to be the default printer. You probably should update the printer driver online, as the drivers CDs are usually out of date before they are even shipped. Vista should have detected the printer and installed the correct driver anyway.
Andrew Dickens replied on September 12, 2008 02:15 to the question "Unlock an iPhone on a Mac when you have downloaded the 2.0 update?????" in Apple:
Try Winpwn or Pwnage (Mac version), they both work on all versions up to 2.02 firmware. I have successfully unlocked and jailbroken my AT&T 2G iPhone to use in UK and Australia.
Create a custom firmware with a few clicks, then 'Restore' the custom firmware onto the iPhone by holding the Shift key and pressing 'Restore' in iTunes 7.x. Don't upgrade to iTunes 8 until after you have done this though.
Firmware 2.1 is out today (12 Sep 2008) so you may as well wait for that.

A comment on the question "The iPhone isn't syncing to my Macbook via bluetooth!" in Apple:
OK, I understand your points, but EVERY mobile phone company on the planet apart from Apple has been providing all of these technologies for years. How would it be if Apple started selling a CRT TV set or a AM radio in 2009? Just because they are 'Apple' doesn't mean they can start palming off ancient technology with a shiny interface and expect everyone to buy it just because its Apple's first device in that field!!! – Andrew Dickens, on August 30, 2008 15:51
A comment on the question "The iPhone isn't syncing to my Macbook via bluetooth!" in Apple:
Who uses wap in the 21st century? I've been using 3G and Symbian browsers for years. I never stated I was ahead of the curve, I stated that Intel has announced a commercially viable wireless charging solution. Medical companies have been doing this for years to charge implantible device batteries, but that is not the same technology. Now if only the underlying Apple technology could be induced into the 21st century we'd all be happy. – Andrew Dickens, on August 29, 2008 02:11
A comment on the idea "How to get what you want in the iPhone 3G, ASAP!" in Apple:
The point is that pretty much every competitor already offers all of these features and more, so iPhone is lagging the market considerably.
To use your logic, why would you want mobile data when you can stay home and use your dialup. Or why would you want voice GPS when you can buy a map? Try asking anyone who owns a TomTom!
re 3G reception and battery life, iPhone is the worst one, not the best. Hence the law suits and all the forums complaining about the reduced or non-existant 3G reception. I have 2 phones on my desk now. One Nokia with full 3G reception and battery life of 5 days, and an iPhone requiring daily charging even though its running on GSM as it cannot detect the 3G cell mast 200m from my window.
You seem to be a little hard of thinking, Mr Apple Fanboi – Andrew Dickens, on August 27, 2008 01:01
A comment on the question "The iPhone isn't syncing to my Macbook via bluetooth!" in Apple:
You may not wish to use bluetooth to sync, but thousands do. What we are protesting about is the usual Apple dictatorship of enforcing how, where and when you will do your computing.
Its totally ludicrous to remove the bluetooth functionality almost entirely, 'just in case' someone sends you a virus.
I very frequently used bluetooth on my Nokia to send colleagues business cards, pictures, video clips, sync to my laptop etc. Now the only thing I can do is carry a cable for syncing, but am unable to do any of the other things even with the cable.
The iPhone is a nice shiny toy with a great user interface, but it's twice the size and very limited in functionality compared to my 3 year old Nokia.
BTW, Intel have just invented a wireless battery charging technology - I for one will be first in there and cut up my cables as soon as possible. – Andrew Dickens, on August 27, 2008 00:48

Andrew Dickens replied on August 27, 2008 00:30 to the problem "iPhone 2.0.2 update buggy" in Apple:
I get the same problem with calls not ringing, just going straight to voicemail even though the phone has good signal strength, plus :
- The whole operating system is sluggish. When I open Contacts it takes up to 7 or 8 secs to open.
- I can't connect to WiFi at work as the Key Index setting is 2, whereas the iPhone can only operate on Key Index 1. (My company also disables data access over the mobile network due to very high localised costs, so I effectively cannot use it for any data services unless I am at home on my personal wifi network.)
- Bluetooth is next to useless - I cannot use it to synchronise, send contacts to other people or any of the other useful features - I can only connect it to a bluetooth headset.
- When is Apple going to get the message and introduce Cut and Paste?? I've been able to do that with my Nokia for donkeys years
Andrew Dickens replied on August 26, 2008 23:39 to the question "Cracked LCD - dare I try to replace it myself?" in HP:
Its not too dificult to do, as long as you know one end of a small phillips screwdriver from the other. This would invalidate your warranty, but I guess as its already broken, there's not much to lose. Pull the screen out, plug the part number into ebay and off you go. Beware of testing it with the power on, there is a small voltage inverter PCB at the bottom of the screen that can give a nasty shock if you touch it whilst it's running.
