You can also tell users to go to the login page on your wiki and use the Request Access button:

Best of luck!

Clif,
That's certainly a way of doing what he's asked, but what you're really saying is "no, you can't do this - so create another wiki OR use another solution altogether".
Mike: See the topic "Files Security" (http://getsatisfaction.com/pbwiki/top...) for what is hopefully a soon-to-come solution to do just what you're asking for.

Hi Raymond,
Currently we are not working on any plans to offer PBwiki offline. We do occasionally get asked this question. You aren't alone.
Thanks for asking about this. That's how we learn what people need.
I am fortunate to have an "always on" connection to the net. So I really don't have much use for offline wikis. However, I have learned that there are ways to create wikis offline.
My favorite offline wiki is WOAS. You can find it here.
http://stickwiki.sourceforge.net/
If you stick to using the HTML codes in the WOAS wiki, much of the content can be copied to a PBwiki with a little editing.

I love the "add all" button idea! Also, we're working on a way to add lots of users at once. Stay tuned! – Joel Franusic, on June 23, 2008 16:24

The new users page functionality which puts the pending invites at the top of the page is very nice, but extended a bit would be even better. How about a single button for "do to all"? And how about a way to add many to the list - like importing a csv file? I'd also suggest a bit of a redesign and make it table based with a select checkbox on the left and action buttons on the top and bottom.

OK... What about NutellaWiki?
"Nutella is also very popular in the rest of Europe, India, Malaysia, Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Singapore, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico and South Africa, mostly with children and teenagers. This is less true in the United States, where the product was only available as an expensive import until the 2000s. In the United States, basketball star Kobe Bryant was a former spokesman for Nutella, having grown up in Italy. Nutella is briefly mentioned in ChloƩ Doutre-Roussel's "The Chocolate Connoisseur", which includes an anecdote of her mother flying into Mexico with several jars and smearing it on her face to convince a Customs Officer that it was a facial mask, and not a banned food product. In 1999 Nutella was one of the official sponsors of the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions league season. They were advertised at every game on a bill board."

Peanuts, yes, in some parts of West Africa and South East Asia, but I don't know anywhere outside North America where peanut butter is widely used, or in many cases even known. The choice of name for an internet company seems quite odd to me, given the increasing incidence of peanut allergies, some fatal. (Peanuts are not strictly a nut. I know that's pedantic, but when members of your family have life-threatening immune responses to certain foods, the difference matters.) Like I said, I have good feelings about pbwiki the company, but the name to me evokes a mixture of kidulthood, insular Americanism, and food toxins.

So here's an update - work on this feature has begun in earnest. We've got a first draft design of the production done - the UI is going to help unify several currently-disparate interfaces, adding both file-level security and files in folders. (AllPages, changes.php, FindPage, tags.php, upload.php, and the Folder pages currently present themselves differently, which can be befuddling to new users.) The engineering backend work for both files in folders and file-level security has already been completed; this work was prioritized as a direct result of this thread on GSFN.
We're also going to be working on making our roadmap and ongoing development more transparent without interfering with our core mission of actually improving the product as fast as possible. :)
And thanks for continuing to speak your mind candidly; these kinds of conversations are what help us move both the company and the product forward.

I think that something like this could help:

It's been my experience that increased engineering transparency helps with satisfaction.

I didn't ask for your "sorry" - I merely explained it's frustrating not to get any update. I'm sure you all are doing your best getting things developed but I don't see how that has anything to do with communication. Isn't this site supposed to be about communication?
So, no, I don't understand why careful implementation and good communication are mutually exclusive.

I'm sorry you feel that way sraymond, but our engineers are doing their best to prioritize between bug fixes and new features. File security will have to be implemented carefully and tested thoroughly, as it will have to match up with our general dedication to security. Hope you understand. – Vu Nguyen, on June 21, 2008 03:36
