I had the same problem with my DELL 1501 battery, on restart my BIOS was sending me a warning message that battery is not recognised , and it didn't want to charge battery. I updated my BIOS from http://support.dell.com , that solved my problem with warning message but it still didn't want to charge my battery. I tried almost everything that I had read but the only thing that worked was next:
Go to DEll QuickSet / power management , make new power scheme turn off every thing (don't let system to go in stand by or to turn off display) then in alarms change that when battery level go under 7% turn of automatic stand by. Next thing is not good for your laptop but is necessary , plug out your charger, when battery is totally discharged pc will turn down , press power button if your PC won't turn on. Plug in your charger charging battery should start normally.
