A comment on the problem "Why Older button is not working?" in Twitter:

This seems to support the statement that the [Older] button becomes disabled when someone you're following has deleted one of their tweets. So when you temporarily lost the following connection with the "deleter/s," the Older button became re-enabled. Now that you have the connections back, you're following the "deleter/s" again, and so the Older button has become disabled again... (not sure that makes any sense) – mdy, on July 25, 2008 06:57

This morning I woke up to find I have my followers and followees back. (Good.) And my Older button stopped working again.

NOT FIXED!

(Back to the Twitterfox+pencil+paper method to catch up with tweets that came in overnight - almost 100 this time.)

Well, that was a nice theory - and it's just been dispoved. I've been keeping a very close eye on my timeline to watch my latest followee stream scroll off, fully expecting paging to stop working again after that.

It didn't!

So, it seems that - at least for me - the paging ("Older") problem is finally solved. Thanks, Twitter!

Now go and solve the following/followee problem already - we're pitching tents for all the refugees on identi.ca! (Which is where I mostly live already....)

Partly restored (FOR NOW *), but it seems some of the problem is still there: I can actually get to page 8, but halfway there and following pages is only tweets from the last person I followed.

That problem has seemingly (only latest followee) always existed, so it doesn't look like this is really solved.

*) FOR NOW, because it always works for a while after following a new person anyway - will have to watch it to see if it lasts.
Theory: it will stop working as soon as all the only-latest followee's tweets have scrolled off page 10.

I've been experiencing this problem for at least 3 weeks. I’m using OS, Windows XP and Vista and still have the problem regardless of operating system.

Older button hasn't been working since I began posting over a week ago, though I can't find the exact date because I can't see my old entries. (The page limit on the "recent updates" page is equally frustrating.)

User: sirexkat. Missing: At least a month, maybe two. OS: varies btw Xandros Linux on my eeePC, XP on my home PC and Vista on my work PC - still have the problem regardless of system.

Most times the older is greyed out. Sometimes it appears if I have been reading for a while - it will go back as far as the page I started on. This is rare.

About 4 days ago, it seemed to be working again. 2 nights ago it suddenly disappeared again. I noticed when user @itsjustkate pointed out hers had gone at the same time. I sent a tweet to all followers asking whether anyone who we both follow had deleted a tweet, but there was no reply. Might be a nice test case - find whether someone we both follow deleted a tweet in the last 2 days or so.... if no-one has, then something else is throwing the error.

I can't state adequately how totally P***ed off I am about the situation, and how much goodwill it has lost twitter. A long string of abusive expletives would not help either of us, but its what I feel like doing.

we're still looking into this issue. we do have a known bug with deleted updates causing older buttons to malfunction.

for those of you who are having persistent older button problems that are not clearing up, please reply to this update with a comment including your user name, how long you've been missing the button, and what operating system you're using.

Older is greyed for me as well, and attempting to manually view pages (i.e. via home?page#) is disallowed - it throws me back to the regular home first-page view. This means my web view has a history of no more than about 45 minutes, with no way to see who said anything before that. It's not feasible for me to manually check each person I'm following one by one to see what they've said in the last couple of hours.
