Just checking in again. If you are using a 2.0 wiki and have "CSS & JavaScript" in your "Settings" page, then, in theory, this should be possible to add. Let me know if you'd like me to see if we can get this working for you. – Joel Franusic, on August 21, 2008 00:48

InField, CharWrite looks really neat! It seems to be exactly the sort of thing to solve the problem of entering IPA characters into a webpage.
I've filed a ticket (#1242) regarding adding support for CharWrite. Please speak up in a few weeks if you don't get any updates from me. – Joel Franusic, on July 10, 2008 00:30

Right -- I have the same problem w/ fonts and with typing in the special characters. We know which IPA unicode font we want to use, but how do we get PBwiki to see it and let us use it? Also, how do we get those special characters in there? I know we can use <verbatim> tags and the unicode codes for symbols, but this is _really_ clumsy. There is a program that LinguistList puts out called "CharWrite", which allows you to type characters in a web page. Could this be somehow added to our wiki? With web pages, you put the CharWrite source code in the same directory as your web page, but we don't have such a directory with a wiki. Here is the URL for CharWrite: http://emeld.org/school/toolroom/soft.... Please let me know if there is an option here. Linguists around the world will celebrate! Thx.</verbatim> – InField, on July 09, 2008 22:52

And while we are on this topic, maybe you can help ME out... do you know of any website where you can paste in IPA characters and have a robot voice pronounce the characters or words for you?
I'm totally new to IPA and I think that my linguistics friends are getting annoyed with all the stuff that I send them to pronounce for me.

Beyond the finite set of fonts that modern web browsers support (http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/Wi...) we don't have any control over the fonts that our users see - which is why you'll see that many web pages with fancy fonts use images instead of text.
To use IPA in your wiki, you might want to try and use "Unicode" IPA characters. I've found what appears to be an exhaustive list here: http://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/home/wells/... let me know if this works for you!
