Just to clarify - it would appear overdue tasks are included as well. Sounds like this is an area ripe for an update.
I think having a two step sort option defined in prefs would be great (eg sort first by due date then by priority, or first by calendar then due date etc). Of course that makes the whole drag thing requested earlier a little harder. Maybe what you could have is a sort button that does a one time sort based on prefs but then allow the user to rearrange things. The button would be like a reset and only be functional if you've manually undone the sort order set in the prefs.

It answers the question in an "Apple" sort of way. You described a workaround so one can only assume the answer is "because we didn't design it that way".
That's not necessarily bad but I too would like at least an option to have it default to "Today". I'm a very busy person, have little need to see anything other than "Today" and on the rare occasions I've switched the date have later missed it until I puzzled over why the list looked odd. If an option to default is difficult how about some sort of obvious decoration when the day is not "Today"?
