A comment on the problem "my home is not a public place..." in foursquare:
I think the rules should stay as-is. "Point whoring" isn't the only reason that people check in at home. I have my apartment as a venue, but I only check in if I'm actively encouraging friends to stop by for a drink, much for the same reason that I would check in at a bar but not at the grocery store-- for me, foursquare (and dodgeball before it) is about meeting up with your friends.
But everyone's usage scenarios differ. Personally, my friends and I use the service to meet up with each other and could care less about points/leaderboards. Then there are other people who see the site as primarily about winning points, and others who see the site as all about journaling where you ate/drank, and others who love the interactions that mayorship rivalries bring, etc. Everyone uses it differently.
Why not keep the platform (reasonably) open so that different groups can tailor it to their own usage preferences.
Just my 2 cents. – stills, on November 04, 2009 01:05
A comment on the problem "Mayorships should disappear if no one checks into a venue for an extended time" in foursquare:
I just listed it as a problem because (if I remember correctly) I believe that the site used to remove "stale" mayorships, and only more recently has the behavior changed. Not positive though-- either way I'd love to see it implemented. – stills, on October 04, 2009 21:02

Mayorships should disappear if no one checks into a venue for an extended timeNot sure if this is a bug or intended behavior, but currently if you become the mayor of a venue and then don't check in again for months then you remain the mayor (so long as no one else checks in either-- this happens at low traffic venues). Logically it would seem that your mayorship should disappear if you haven't checked into the venue in the last 60 days, right?

Love the revised user feed!I like the website update with the revised user feed. I hated having tips/to-do's that I added 6 months ago sitting on the feed.... much nicer to just have 10 most recent items.

Merging venues no longer automatically merges aliasesMerging venues no longer automatically merges aliases. I just merged two venues, 60559 and 121091, together (as superuser). Previously when merging venues the aliases were automatically merged into the new venue, but this time this didn't happen. I had to manually add the alias from 121091 into 60559.
Bug?

stills replied on August 22, 2009 01:21 to the idea "List all venues in search results" in foursquare:
I think the issue here is with aliases. If you search for a word/phrase that happens to be an alias for a venue (or the name of a venue) then it automatically brings you to that page. Another example is if you search for anything with the word "airport" in the name you will probably automatically get redirected to your local airport rather than shown a list of results.
I agree, this is really frustrating. I think a better setup would be to show a normal search results page, with the "suggested item" appearing at the top of the page.

I've talked to a LOT of people who would really like this "do not ping" functionality. There are a lot of check-ins (gym, lunch, etc) where you might want to check-in and have no reason to keep it secret, but you don't want to annoy your friends either. My sense is that this is significantly more valuable than the ability to selectively tweet.
I'd be thrilled if you could add a "do not ping this check-in" for this sort of thing. Keep the check-in public, but no need to spam people. Ideally the "don't ping" option would simultaneously prevent the sending of emails, iPhone push notif, and twitter DM.
If you really think the UX would be confusing then enable the functionality but have the choice hidden by default. My guess is that the people who really care to have this level of granularity (such as myself) would be willing to first check a box on a setting page to enable the slider.

Re-reading my comment, realizing I sound really demanding. It's your project, and you guys should develop it as you see fit. Just saying that there's a lot of demand for BB app, and we'd love to see it as soon as you can develop it...or at least we'd love to hear your best guess as to when we should realistically start looking for it :) – stillman, on March 09, 2009 07:52
