We very much understand the effect that email verification has on membership drop-off. Every extra step in the sign-up process see less members make it through.
The reason we (& Ning) modified our email verification is to control spam, which if left uncontrolled will destroy your netywork eventually. We are aware that Ning has had a terrible time lately with spam and we have acted promptly to avoid the same on SocialGO.
What is also important is that when members verify there email that they also agree to receive emails from you. This is a legal requirement in many countries and is strictly enforced by internet service providers and big webmail providers like GoogleMail & Hotmail. For sure this process effects sign-ups, but the of those that do sign-up you are then legally able to email them as they have agreed up front to receive your emails.
Sorry I could give you the exact answer you wanted, but I'm afraid there are external legal and operational pressures on us that don't allow exactly what you want.
I would be happy to hear anytime any ideas you have on how we can improve your membership sign-up. Email me at support@socialgo.com.

Hi Teresa,
The malicious attack we had against us is largely under control now. So almost everyone should have fine access. However, there are a few small geographic pockets that remain effected.
Can you tell me the country and city you are in and your network name and we will investigate straight away. Also confirm if you are still having the problem.
Very sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi BA
Starting around 3 days ago (Wednesday 9:45PM GMT) our infrastructure and your networks began to become the victim of a Denial of Service attack which has caused multiple problems to your networks.
The most obvious symptom is the inability to access your network and severe slowdowns in service.
The team and I are working on this issue 24 hours a day to bring service back and are making good progress. The affected servers are a subset of Tiscali's infrastructure who are working with us to resolve the issue.
It is always sad when people choose to maliciously attack website such as ours. It has affected numerous services in recent week including Facebook and Twitter so we are not alone.
We know this is frustrating and are doing everything we can to solve it as quickly as possible. So far today, we have 80 had 80% of the usual traffic we would expect on a day such as this.
Thanks for all your feedback on the issue we will continue to update this thread with more information as and when it developers,
