    Derivative works commercial usage process.
I created a derivative works using a sample I downloaded on the site. There may be a motion picture publisher using the derivative works in a major upcoming film if all works out well. My question is what procedure(s) do I need to go through to ensure legal use of the sample in the works? Am I required to upload the new works to MMM? ...can't remember the procedures here for this^_^ Please enlighten me how I use this legally and what I need to do to legally allow the motion picture publishers to use the works in their film and soundtrack cd's^^

ah, ya win some, ya loose some. It's too bad that with technology sometimes the simplest ideas require the most work. Thanks for considering^_^

    Greater artist distribution flexability.
How about allowing artists who post music/stems/songs to select individuals who may download/purchase the song/stems for free? Their options could be categorized by user name, all, or previous buyers.

This would allow those feeling generous enough to give the community good music for free. Also, I know that sometimes I upload a song/stem and then later update it and reload a new version of it. This would be a great idea to implement because it could also allow users who have purchased previous stems in the past to be notified of updates and given the option of having the new stem for free.

    Allow spendable Royalties
How about allowing those who have accrued royalties the option of using their balance to pay for songs/stems they wish to purchase!

Stephen Kennedy replied on January 15, 2009 15:39 to the idea "Looping Option(s)?" in MixMatchMusic:

    Stephen Kennedy
The only possible idea I can think of is allowing the user or purchaser to specify how many times a loop-enabled song will loop through...and then whether or not to have the song fade out or simply end. I'd say it would need to be user specified in the MixMaker, so that it then actually becomes a stem/song with a distinct beginning and end. So...in addition to setting loop markers, you would need to have a box to specify how many times a song plays through all the set markers, and then another option to have the song fade out at the very end of all the loop-throughs, complete with the ability to specify how long the fadeout takes.

Oi. *chuckle*...this all sounds like it would be difficult to implement.

    Looping Option(s)?
Alright! More suggestions! How about a LOOP funtion in the MixMaker that allows users to highlight or set a keypoint-marker at a point in the stem that playback will return to after reaching the end of the stem/song? This ensures that if a stem has an intro, that you can have loopback start "after" it and at a predetermined point.

It's handy for those streaming the stems, and it gives those purchasing/downloading the stems an objective look at it's self-looping possibilities for use in other media.

And...if you wanted to get fancy...you could have multiple loop-back keypoints. ...one for each pass of the dial. (i.e. first pass returns to marker 1, second pass returns to marker 2, FINAL pass always returns to marker 1.) Cool eh?

Only problem I can see with this is...if you use it on a song that someone wants to buy...hmmmm. .... ideas anyone?

"However, your "transaction log" always has a complete listing of the activity of ALL of your music. Check that out as well."

You are correct Jordan. But it's as you say, it would be nice to have all that "usedin" information in an nice organized little package.

By the way, thanks for explaining the genealogy thing to me. Your tree lineage idea sounds like a hoot!

Sure I'll clarify. ...and sorry about the relationship terminology. It's kind of hard for me to get it right. ...so let me know if I'm missing something. For instance, I upload a "sample/loop"...you guys call it a stem. ...but you also call a collection of samples/loops that are put together and then saved a new "stem".

Let's say I upload a sample called "string 1". Then in the MixMaker I add some percussion to it called "perc1", and save the new creation as "song1". Song1 has string1 and perc1 as attributes aka children. What would it be if someone incorporated "Song1" as part of a new mix called "Song2"? Would Song1 now be a child to Song2, or would song2 simply have all of Song1's attributes appended to it's own?

At any rate^_^...I never noticed the "used in" tab before *biff*, but my idea is slightly different. Instead of having to click on each one of your personally uploaded stems to see what they have been used in, it would be awesome to have a section in the music palette that allows one to see every users stem that incorporates any of your own stem/sample uploads.

For example, you click on a tab in your profile labeled "derivative" to see a list of ALL user created songs/stems which feature one of your own uploads. Additionally, it would be nice to be able to see "which" of your own stems the user(s) incorporated into their works by mousing over (or clicking on a link) next to the stem in the "Derivatives" tab/page.

Does that make more sense? I feel it would simply be nice to enable artists to more easily see where/what their works are being used in, and to have all the info in one nice little area to see.

Let's see stem attributes AND attribute stems.
We have a way to see what siblings are attributed to a stem. How about a way to see what stems use those siblings? (i.e. I click on one of my uploaded samples and can view a list of what stem(s) are currently implementing my sample). ...on that note, it would also be nice to have a list in general that a user can view all stems/songs containing/using his/her samples/uploads. ...///// ...wow, i don't think I've every used that many slashes in one sentence before^_^

I think I may have said it somewhere before...but hows about a mailing list for folks interested in keeping up to date with important site updates etc. and/or on option that allows one to be notified when a chosen user uploads more stems to check out^_^

Allow artists to Request Their Needs, and Musicians to fullfill theirs.
Alright, try this one on for size. ...and it's a big one.

How about adding the ability for musicians to shout out to the peoples when they are looking for something specific to add to a works in progress? ...and likewise, a place where those with a desire to contribute to something can find those who are looking for a particular type of contribution.

    Let me elaborate.

For example: Let's say John reeeeally likes writing melodies, but can't do harmony or accompaniment worth a whoee. And let’s say Jane (who does not know John) is great at writing harmony but not melody. Finally, let’s say Bubba likes making custom made killer beats and nothing else. All three each have unique talents, and unique desires and needs for the things they are personally working on. And all three want to actively contribute to something someone is working on or have someone create something specifically for them.

Solution: A “REQUESTS” page (something that could also be integrated into a users profile/portfolio page) that allows contributors/users to select a stem and put out a request for a musical component to be made for/with it. Requests could specify and be sorted by stem details like bpm, genre etc, as well as the “type” of material requested. (perc., melody, harmony etc.)

This would enable, for instance, someone who likes writing melodies for HipHop to be able to go to the requests page and sort by melodies -> HipHop to see if anyone has any requests for HipHop melodies. The searches could follow the same music/instrument tree hierarchy you already have in place for labeling stems. This could include not only music/song component requests (melody, chorus etc.) but ALSO instrument requests. Those who are looking for someone to play a big fat kazoo chorus to their unfinished works can REQUEST both “kazoo” and “chorus” for their stem. (or in our case “other”) and then comment on their request to further explain in detail what they are looking for in the contribution.

Let requesters be able to comment or elaborate on what they are wanting from the contributor(s), and likewise, allow the contributor(s) to communicate with the requestor via both the Requests page and through their profile. To keep it all tidy, you could allow users to have the ability to follow request activity and group requests they are following together like you do “downloads”, “portfolio”, and “pinned music” on their profile page. Allow users to be able to select in their profile any stem attribute combination (instrument(s), genre(s), and song component(s)) that they wish to be notified of if a request becomes available. ...you could call it their "proficiencies" listing. ...well...I'll leave that naming stuff up to you*chuckle*

Finally *huff huff* if an instrument or style or song component a user wants to Request (or contributor wants to track requests of) is not in the tree selection, just let them fill in the blanks so that others can find it by searching for that particular thing or by simply searching “other” or “all” in a trees field. This way, if I'm looking for someone to contribute a Balalaika solo to my song, the request will appear under "Balalaika", "other", and "all" when searched for.

*whoo* Ok...it's 3am ...so hopefully some of this made sense. I think it would be another giant step forward in catering to musicians, further increasing the productivity of the site, and benefiting its users! Whadddya thinks?

    Clip copying timing off...
When copying clips in the MixMaker, is it supposed to copy the clip flush against the previous instance(s)? Currently, whenever I copy clips it "appears" to copy flush against its parent, but upon zooming in, it is actually several clicks off. Is this being fixed in the new version?

Stephen Kennedy replied on November 30, 2008 03:27 to the idea "Loaded Stem Names more Viewable" in MixMatchMusic:

    Stephen Kennedy
What you say is perfectly understandable. The main purpose for my naming convention, however, is to allow me to know what files I upload are all related to each other. I'm currently breaking down a lot of my music into stems and then uploading them in order to reconstruct them in the mixer.

Currently I have no way of attributing files I upload to each other "prior" to loading them in the MixMaker and publishing. If I have 80 stems that I created all from one song, it would be nice to be able to show they are all related somehow without having to fill in all the metadata first. ...sometimes a person just doesn't have time to sit down and fill out metadata for 80+ stems they're uploading. ...and, although I could show their relation by giving them all a similar name, it still doesn't tell me exactly what it is until after I've entered all the metadata.

Finally, my other reason for the naming convention is to also try to help out those downloading my audio by providing them file names in a format that will be useful to them when they can no longer rely on metadata for sorting their samples. (i.e. on their own personal computer/sample library)

    Stephen Kennedy
True, it is not "actively" of any use without any waveform loaded in the window. However, it IS useful if an individual knows they want to have it in their palette of stems for a song, but at moment isn't sure just "where" they want it. This also eliminates the accidental deletion of a stem from the mixer if someone deletes the only audio instance.

As you mentioned above, you would need a way of clicking on a stem and "adding" the audio to the workspace.

Clip removal without Removing Loaded Stem
Allow the deletion of a stems audio clip in the Mixer window without it removing the loaded stem from the stem column on the left. This currently occurs when you load a stem in the mixer window and then delete the only example of it loaded in the workspace. (i.e. I load a stem into the mixer window and don’t want it active in the song I’m working on yet so I delete the example that is automatically loaded.)
