Couple things I find as problematic:
The bar takes up too much space
The 3 column layout is too difficult to scan

Maybe one thing that could help is to make the "thumbnails" of the components smaller. I just need to pick out the one that I need, it doesn't need to be real size.

Here is an mock-up. Is there any way it can be a floating window on top of the parent window. Like Photoshop?
