fyi, the first part must be related to the virtual networks installed by vmware fusion:
    vmnet8: flags=8863<up> mtu 1500
    inet 172.16.202.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 172.16.202.255
    ether 00:50:56:c0:00:08
    vmnet1: flags=8863<up> mtu 1500
    inet 172.16.20.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 172.16.20.255
    ether 00:50:56:c0:00:01

however, that doesn't explain why check off would be trying to look up names of windows file sharing hosts on my local network. none of my other applications do that.

i'm sure there's a simple explanation for it. i'd just like to know what it is.

why does check off attempt to make network connections via nmblookup?
my firewall tells me that check off continually attemps to use /usr/bin/nmblookup to make UDP network connections to IP numbers 172.16.20.255 and 172.16.202.255. can you explain why that is?

also, it attempted to make a TCP connection to checkoffapp.com when i first launched it, even though i told it i did not want automatic update checking.

software which makes unauthorized use of my internet connection is usually something i try to avoid.
