Added to this (and probably very related) .. I just noticed that the last tweet displayed for me right now was 55 minutes ago. And the little spinner is going (without me trying to post) so it looks more like an overall connection issue.. the connection just keeps trying to do something but never (or it takes a LOOONG time) finished until I quit and restart..

Posting a tweet sometimes just 'doesnt work' unless restarted.Sometimes when trying to post a new tweet, the little 'loading' icon keeps spinning without ever stopping. If I quit and reload tweetie, I'm able to post the tweet just fine. The loading icon on both the Tweetie main window (at the bottom) and in the 'post tweet' window keep going. I'm pretty sure the main Tweetie window starts spinning while I'm still writing and doesn't stop.. If I hit the send button and notice it spinning at the bottom of the main Tweetie window, I'm certain my tweet won't post and have to copy it, restart and try again. It always posts after a restart. Quite annoying.-

I was just coming to report the same idea. The popup window, in general, is just silly because all it does is display the same 'Bad Gateway' message that was displayed on the bottom of the Tweetie window.. So on top of making the error disappear after the error has cleared up on it's own, for other errors (that remain), if clicking on the error icon isn't going to reveal any more/new information, it should just forgo the extra popup window.-

This is the 1 feature that still makes twitterific viable for me. I really NEED the growl support and I love the ideas in this thread.. customizability based on username (i.e. a customizable list in preferences or something) would make it FANTASTIC! and allow me to throw away twitterific for good x=)-

I agree with everyone here. Understandably, some of the beta users and early adopters want their friends to join in and it's just one more hurdle they have to jump over.. I liken BrightKite to a more full featured Loopt.. One of the nicer (and I think only nicer) thing about loopt was that everything could be done in the iPhone app.. I've never even been to loopt.com..
Also, understandably, brightkite is still in private beta and you have to expect that some things just aren't done yet. So I await the coming versions of brightkite where account creation and account managment settings are all done right in the app itself.. Keep up the good work!
swemoney replied on October 23, 2008 22:31 to the question "What exactly is "place snapping"?" in Brightkite:
I'm pretty sure Ken has it mostly right.. My iPhone finds my exact location (within a couple of meters) most of the places I go, but I think place snapping is there to give people a better idea of where you are. An intersection just isn't as nice and pretty of a place to check in at as an actual establishment that your at. I also think the place 'snapping' remembers where you selected at certain locations so it will always snap to that location when your close enough to it instead of having you select it again..

Most settings through the iPhone app..I'd love to see more of the 'settings' you can find on the brightkite website in the iphone app.. A section in the iPhone's settings app would be great to control things like privacy settings and allow users to not have to use the web app for anything.. New users will be taken aback if they have to switch between the web app and the iphone app for various tasks..

After signing up (through a friends invite) I don't see that friend..I signed up after a friend sent me an invite (he had checked the 'auto request friendship') .. we're not friends, but when I go to the friends -> people tab on the iphone app, I don't see him there. I see his activity, but not him on the people tab..-
