I switched back to v3 a long time ago. Unfortunately, you have less than a month before StumbleUpon switches us both to v4. – tamar, on October 15, 2009 12:58

Hey George, is the Similarity Meter (Venn diagram) coming back or no? This FAQ item doesn't seem to say that: http://www.stumbleupon.com/help/New_S... – tamar, on October 14, 2009 15:44

This is a very good point. This was one of the ways I knew how to network with other individuals on Stumble. And as Sebastian said, while tags may not have *actively* been used on SU, it was easy to glance at the tag cloud and get an idea about the stumbler, especially to gain insight about compatibility for networking purposes. – tamar, on October 05, 2009 12:13

Your comment is complete useless. Please come here when you have something valuable to add. Otherwise, this might as well be equivalent to trolling or spam. – tamar, on October 05, 2009 01:35

"No feature is lost from V3 to V4."
Now here are the questions of the day then.
1. Where are the compatibility charts - the Venn diagrams telling me how likely it is that I'd like someone else's stumbles (or that I'm looking in the mirror?)
2. Am I not able to share stories with multiple recipients at this time? According to the V4 feedback group on SU, someone said that doesn't exist anymore. If you ask me, it seems that this feature is actually lost.
George, I have no problem with relocated features--really. I do have a problem with features going kaput and it sure as heck seems that both are gone. – tamar, on September 30, 2009 16:23

Sorry. I'm frustrated that George, who clearly has arguments from *users* of the website toward keeping the tag cloud, shot us down. Heck, with SU being "more social" and a "social bookmarking site," I hardly see either being emphasized in V4. It's really a shame.
I get it. When Facebook came out with its news feed and other services came out with change, people get pissed. But they also didn't lose functionality - they gained more. Everything that kept me enjoying SU is gone now. – tamar, on September 30, 2009 15:28

Perce--I'm actually on your side here and am trying to bring up other points to bolster your own argument. I think that SU needs to first EMPHASIZE tags ALTOGETHER. Since they *didn't*, they don't see a need to keep tag clouds there or anything else tag-related for that matter from my observations (i switched back to V3 though because V4 is downright awful).
But -- if you don't want me to help support you here, I guess I'm done.

I'm not asking for someone to look at my discovery and that's not scalable anyhow. I guess I'm spoiled by Google (and even more recently, Bing) since I don't think this kind of thing happens very often there and that they understand human intent. SU is a small company that has gone through a few hands so I understand limited ability to understand the content of a submission. However, do we know with certainty that a computer with an AI algorithm is evaluating the page? I never knew that, and based on some of the submissions I receive (especially those that violate TOS, e.g. Digg submissions from digg.com URLs), I'm curious to know why this AI exists if it's not taking action on spam abusers. Sorry, this is TOTALLY off topic, so nevermind -- but I have always doubted that the content was evaluated at all. – tamar, on September 30, 2009 15:02

As I said in my earlier message, I think it's SU's fault that tags and tag clouds have not been used heavily. Instead of dropping it in V4, they should actually emphasize tags and "labeling" of submissions. – tamar, on September 30, 2009 14:58
A comment on the idea "Bring back the Tag Cloud" in StumbleUpon:
Sebastian, nope - I'm not confusing topics and tags. Based on a category/topic that has been suggested by SU's limited list, SU has assumed incorrect "default" tags on particular stories. It's very weak. I'm not sure there's an algorithm in play there at all. Does SU actually evaluate the content of a page submitted? – tamar, on September 30, 2009 14:50

Not sure what you mean, but I think this isn't the fault with the users really. If SU actually fixed its "language algorithm" (that's right, they don't have one) problems, maybe tag clouds would actually be heavily used. Instead, SU didn't do a thing about how poorly it was managed, let it die, and now one of its employees say that there's no room for it due to underutilization. Gee.

My big concern isn't so much about the *tag cloud*, but I want to see the 5 tags that people apply to specific submits. I can't even see my own easily anymore. Half the time, the service tags things inappropriately, like SU's immediate assumption that an article about drugs (which isn't safe for kids) is "pornography." I saw an article about colorblindness the other day, and SU tagged it "glaucoma." Right.
Knowing what people tag specific items is INCREDIBLY helpful. Now that's gone (or at least invisible). Sure, it wasn't perfect, but people (like me) DID actually try to tag items appropriately.
With V4 of the site, I think it's in SU's best interest to actually fix the tags and categories once and for all and make them actually match the content they reference. "Pornography" and "glaucoma" are sad attempts to get it right, but instead of doing without tags, fix it!

A comment on the question "iPhone and iPod Touch Application Shortsightedness - Here's a "Common Sense" Suggestion" in Apple:
Excellent. While this solution wasn't 100%, it was good enough. With the iPhone/iPod Touch 3.1 update, though, Apple effectively killed this workaround. At this point, I don't get it. Does Apple really want to force us to listen to the same 1 minute stretch of music when we're playing a game for hours at a time? It's like torture. Why the hell would Apple kill a good thing?!
iluvcc - if you know of another workaround, I'd appreciate it. – tamar, on September 10, 2009 19:35
