I changed my twitter name shortly after I got started and it actually worked better for me. My original twitter name did not reveal what my tweets were all about well enough and missed the target audience. My advice is to keep the original if you are well established - start a new one and encourage followers to transfer over. Once the new one has a good following or your key followers are in place, then you are all set to go. When you change your name, it takes awhile for searches to find it in twitter as well as other searches. It won't even show up at first.
Good luck with your decision.
