A comment on the problem "New Vipre installation not working. I'm unprotected now." in Sunbelt Software:
Something I found working remotely on a clents machine last night was I had to turn off the firewall and AP otherwise the system would lock up on a scan. You might try that also. That is a known issue i discovered in the Beta foirums last night. Try turning off Active Protection and see what happens. – Techzilla, on July 29, 2008 14:58

Mike,
It looks like sunbelt answered the question but to add to that in safe mode most software and services are disabled allowing apps like vipre to run without a conflict. It really sounds though like you have some underlying issues or other problems with your system. If you can successfully run in safe mode then i would try to track down the program by turning off all startup items using MSCONFIG from the run command prior to exiting safe mode...then try a quick scan or something in regular windows. If that works then slowly turning items back on and rebooting would likely nail it down. – Techzilla, on July 28, 2008 19:32

Mike,
Vipre has a safe mode scanner also. but you failed to mention exactly what the error you got was. If your disc is failing or you are having some other underlying issue, any scanner may encounter difficulties. Is the failure at random spots, or on a certain file? Or possibly is the file it is checking possibly huge? – Techzilla, on July 27, 2008 22:48

I just opened the email I recieved and followed the second link in the email to the upgrade page. You enter your CS reg info and place your order...You pay then you get the download links and your new key in a webpage. Physically there is no difference in the trial or the paid version...they are exactly the same just like CS is.The first link in the email takes you to the trial version where you can read the product details. In the FAQ it says to uninstall CS and any other AV type software.
From the FAQ-------------------------------..
I ran the upgrade from CounterSpy to VIPRE, but the VIPRE Install is not getting through its setup.
Make sure that CounterSpy is uninstalled. Also, we strongly recommend to turn off (better yet uninstall) other antivirus products that have active protection. After that, re-run the VIPRE install. If that does not do the trick, get in touch with our Support Team.
-----------------------------------------------
The upgrade offered was a licence upgrade. I agree the email would imply a software upgrade.the way it was written.
here is a link to the manual uninstall portion of CS
http://beta.sunbelt-software.com/view...
There is also a liknk on that page to the Microsoft cleanup utility.
That should help remove the leftover AV stuff that likely didn't uninstall also,
Many of us beta testers faced these issues and more and again there is a wealth of info in the beta forum. Create an account and you will see everything..otherwise it is hidden. – Techzilla, on July 27, 2008 22:43
Techzilla reported a problem in Sunbelt Software on July 27, 2008 05:52:
I HateSpam V5 for Outlook opens explorer window at Startup....when Vipre is set to load at Startup. When starting Windows XP SP3 with I hateSpam V5 installed and Vipre, an Explorer window opens up to c:\program files\sunbelt\ showing the ihatespam folder in the window. Vipre fails to load when this happens but can be manually started with no issues.
The problem goes away if I remove vipre startup using msconfig. Both applications otherwise work perfectly as expected.

I have been using Counterspy since V1 and participated in all the Beta programs for Counterspy and Vipre.
CS and Vipre are two completely different animals. There is really no such thing as an upgrade across the two platforms. It is best to do a clean uninstall of CS AND a reboot prior to installing Vipre. The same goes for any other AV type product you are trying to replace.
As I recall, if you go to http://beta.sunbelt-software.com and create an account in the forum, you can read the readme files for Vipre and CS.
Vipre has been in beta status for several months and has become stable on my system for at least the last 2 months. Some people will have issues with any app regardless of how well it is written. If registration is your only problem you are lucky. Customer Service has always been great sorting out my reg problems since I have multiple machines and buy long term licences.
Vipre will leave everything you have used or may try literally in the dust. As I write this I am running a deep scan....no slowdown.
