The latest version of Wordpress is 2.6.1. Make sure your hosting provider has the proper MySQL and PHP versions - check out Things to know before you begin
If you really want to get started - you can open a free Wordpress blog account and then when you have your own site running - you can export the blogs, comments and pages from the Wordpress site to an XML file and import into your own hosted site

Eric, try switching to another theme (one that is definitely working in 2.5.1) . Your problem sounds like your previous theme was calling the archives in an old method or something -

Well, not exactly. I subsequently upgraded to the new version (previous version now) and I broke my blog. Maybe I shouldn't dig into the details of programming, know what I mean? I abandoned the blog and am now trying to figure out what to do next. Trying out Tumblr, but not sure if that is what I need. Thanks for asking, though! -

Great question... and their customer service is less than stellar. I'd be tempted to switch if their coverage wasn't vastly superior to every other wireless company (where I live, at least). -

I am not using a downloaded version of Wordpress. I am using the Wordpress.com hosting site. I'm trying to edit the profile for mikeontv.wordpress.com not my own website's CMS profile. -

What version are you using? And what browser? I'm using the latest 2.6 and my browser is Firefox. Have you tried with another browser? Cleaning out your cache? Hitting F5? Maybe it's changed, but you don't know it. -

No it has not resolved.
When I try to change my email in my profile it reverts back to the original email address. Whyyyyyyyyy! -

I guess you could do this with a front page as a portal, but it wouldn't necessarily be a WordPress front page. Pages can be written inside the domain using WordPress for the applications you mentioned.
It sounds like you want a community vs. a blog. Have you looked into forum boards? -

I totally agree. I think it's the only company out there that doesn't offer some sort of rollover plan. -
